Lorna's walk 01

Suggested by BBC Cov & Warks' Moira Rawlings
Each week Lorna Bailey will be giving details of a walk in Coventry and Warwichire on her Saturday Breakfast Show. First up is a circular walk from Hunningham near Leamington, through Wappenbury and Eathorpe.

Circular walk from Hunningham

Distance: 3 miles
Time: 01:00
Advice: Steep at times so definitely not for prams or young children. Keep dogs under control as livestock is often in the fields.
In brief: Use the bridle path at Hunningham and head towards Wappenbury. Turn right towards the church following the cemetery round to the left and turn right just in front of Hall. Walk through Eathorpe and head to the River Leam. Follow farm track back.

Start: From Coventry follow the Southam Road (A423) - turn right at the Ryton Connection mini-roundabout and then take a left after going through Bubbenhall on the main road. Go to Weston-under-Wetherley and take a sharp left towards Hunningham.
Points of interest: Wappenbury cemetery where the founder of Jaguar cars, Sir William Lyons is buried; Eathorpe village Hall and Hunningham village centre (not on the walk but worth diverting to look at at the end) and the fourteenth century bridge at Hunningham.

Contact details:
address: Hunningham

Refreshments: Two great pubs the Red Lion at Hunningham (just on the banks of the Leam) and the Plough at Eathorpe.

Parking: Once over the the bridge in Hunningham go past the pub to the bus stop and phone box on the left - you should be able to park there - if not then park at the Red Lion and walk up

The route I took was from the bridle path near the bus stop and phone box at Hunningham (there is only one and it's just up from the Red Lion).

Go down the bridle path through three gated fields and over the small bridge into Wappenbury. Turn right at the gate and go towards Wappenbury Church follow the cemetery round to the left and down the road. Then turn right just in front of Wappenbury Hall and walk down the hill.

This is on the road through Eathorpe. Just before you get to the bridge there is a bench where people can sit for a while.

Follow the road out through Eathorpe - past two lovely thatched cottages and the village hall - and walk out with open fields on both sides. Look out for stile on the right and go over that - follow the path to another stile (hidden in trees) and follow path again to another stile just opposite.

You can walk down to the River Leam at this point and follow path up to farm track. Once on the farm track follow to the end where you'll find yourself back at the bus stop in Hunningham.
