James Vinciguerra introduces himself with a great statement: “I can draw almost anything and provoke a positive reaction from the viewer. It could be enjoyment, shown with a smile, or amazement. Mostly it’s a need to possess it for themselves.”

A playful approach

Born in Leamington in 1973, James seems to have developed an unusual style from his early years in the heart of Warwickshire. He describes his playful approach: “The world through my eyes tends to want to be exaggerated, yanked, twisted. My method of drawing quickly and aggressively has the desired effect of creating movement and verve.”

Talking about his architectural paintings and portraits, he adds: “The painting grounds the image in a magical place. It sits between the real and the fantastic.”

Bright ideas

James also enjoys the real and the fantastic in life: “Inspirations and the like include, Picasso, Hockney, John Piper, El Greco, Mariscal, Cartoons such as Tom and Jerry and the Pink Panther. Things that don’t fire my imagination include, television programmes before 8pm, the album charts, beige interiors and the A426!”

Layered methods

The work is created using a combination of traditional and new techniques. First James draws the subject in a variety of mediums. These can include mono-print, charcoal, colour pencil and collage.

He then scans the image into his computer and paints it digitally, drawing with the mouse in the same way the artist would use a pencil or brush.
