The Osmonds
Steady ladies....

Seventies 'shang-a-lang'

Were you a seventies teen? Remember the Osmonds versus David Cassidy? Did you wear tartan socks to school and have clackers in your satchel? We want your memories of that decade - tell us how it was for you.

If, like me, you were a teenager in the 70’s (ouch), you may share my sense of horror that it was over thirty years ago. The Osmonds, Les McKeown of the Bay City Rollers and David Cassidy have recently been on tour again, and the newspapers and TV showed middle aged screaming female fans and a row of balding, hair dyed and hairsprayed rock stars doing the chat show train to plug their revival tour. Great stuff.

During the summer, the Nuneaton and Bedworth Museum ran a 70’s exhibition showing seventies memorabilia loaned to them by local people. It got us all shang-a-lang about the decade of flares and boob tubes, and wondered what your memories - and fashion disasters were.

To jog your memory, here's a list of words that all mean the '1970's' to us.

Abba
The original fab four

You can add to our list, and send us your memories by using the form at the bottom of this page.

You cannot be serious!

If that list has got you going and you can add to it then let us know. Have you got any stories from the seventies you can recall? Did you go to see the Osmonds in concert? Did you get told off at school for wearing Bay City Roller socks?  Did your mum have a hostess trolley that sat in the corner of the dining room never being used? Bet she had a serving hatch too….

Briefly I was the archetypical teenybopper. From David Cassidy (Wembley and Whitecity Concerts - I saw the poor girl who was killed at Whitecity) and at Heathrow Airport. I saw the Osmonds at Heathrow and was on the level below the wall that collapsed and saw the Osmonds at Earls Court. As for the Bay City Rollers: well I was my mother's nightmare. I would skip school to see them in concert, travel to Scotland (twice) to visit Prestonpans where their fanclub was based and, again, Heathrow Airport when we had a tip off they would be flying in/out. With all of them, my friends and I would travel to London early Saturday mornings when we knew they would be appearing on shows. Needless to say, I didnt have a bone fide boyfriend until I was 17. Who would put up with such a star struck girl whose benchmark for a boyfriend was in the image of her idols? I swear, I promised myself I would never marry unless it was to either David Cassidy or Eric Faulkner. I dont regret anything - it was all so innocent.

Linda
Ben Sherman shirts, Harrington jackets and Crombies (Doc Maartens and bovver boys of course) and then the other faction: the 'hairies' with their tapestry bags, loons and greasy hair. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. on TV with Napoleon Solo and Ilya Kuryakin (so cute!) - chewing gum and cards too. Mojos and Black Jacks - both 4 for a penny. Thanks Sam (below) for the memory of Spanish gold! Twiggy, mini, midi and maxi skirts. So many memories... And does anyone remember the GoJo girls - forerunner to Pan's People?

Although I'm from Canada some of my earliest memories are of my Grandfather taking me to town to buy wooden puzzles at Barnaby's Toy Store. I remember the stirs going to the second floor seemed huge to me then but the climb was well woth the effort.

Jill
Jubblies - I bought some the other day for my own kids - they're only half the size that I remember.

Elaine
I wasn't quite a teen until 1980 but the memories are just as vivid. Orange suede shoes I remember the day my mum bought them for me, Bay City Rollers and the Osmonds, Orange Vinyl 3 pc suite, which I drew pictures on, large lapels and kipper ties and trying on my mums long flowing dresses made from awful synthetic material, my dads side-burns, dandylion and burdoch (or dandylion and birdmuck as we affectionately called it)the summer of 1977 when we had the water shortage, oh those were the days

Vic
The pop man with his regular Alpine deliveries. Dandylion and burdock and cream soda were our favourites....and the milkshake that came in cardboard straws? Rip the ends off, pour the powder into milk and then sip through the straw that went soggy and disintegrated into the pink milk. I can still taste it today! The Austin Princess (how flash?), Action Jacks, Look-in magazine and Shiver and Shake comic, spokey dokeys, Smurfs from National petrol stations, Kevin Keegan's bike fall on Superstars and Clarks shoes with a compass in the sole. Those were the days, my friend!

Sharky
The Allegro car with the square steering wheel, a day out to the Bull Ring shopping centre, Oxford bags or patch pockets and cherry red nine hole Doc Martens....

Jane
Yeah, I remember Rise and Shine! I rather liked it back then..... :-) I remember calorie free Tab too - horrid, and the Nimble bread girl in that balloon....

Flibble
Was it just me or was all food orange in the seventies? My favourite orange memory is Rise and Shine - remember that? Powdered orange drink that was reconstituted with water to make something prentending to be fresh orange juice. Something of a delicacy but, as I recall, quite foul tasting.
