In a new feature on the Bob Brolly afternoon show on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire, local music expert Pete Chambers takes a look back at the best in pop music from the past. Every other Friday from 3pm, Pete will be on air to talk about the bands, singers and songs that made Britain swing during the 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond You can also take a trip down memory lane with the songs themselves. We've got a departure this week as Pete takes a look at Russian Girlfriend, who are still going strong today. Russian Girlfriend, by Pete Chambers Front-runners of the new breed of Warwickshire Rock, Russian Girlfriend formed in 200 and, their unique sound has seen them take the local scene by storm. Matt Hanley, Jools Street, Rob Roach and David Emery have combined to create something romantically brooding and emotionally powerful. Franz Kafka would be proud of their aural imaginary, not to mention Hanley’s highly charged vocals, a voice to truly cherish especially when it's backed by these guys! Their first CD, produced by Johnny Rivers, contained the favourites Chameleon Boy and Butterfly Order and saw them pick-up a bevy of great press. A second offering is promised soon, it will include the very poignant track Born - a song that tries to make some kind of sense of the loss of David & Sonja Emery’s baby girl Andreya and the subsequent involvement of the band in raising awareness and funds for Walsgrave Hospital children’s unit. Russian Girlfriend will be playing at the Nags in Nuneaton on 1 April and in Coventry at the Jailhouse on 26 April. - Matt Hanley will join Bob and Pete for a chat during the show on Friday, 4 March.
- You can read Pete Chambers' Backbeat music nostalgia column in the Coventry Evening Telegraph every Tuesday.
