Coventry University's School of Art and Design has underlined its reputation for producing some of the best car designers in the world by being selected by Ferrari for a new competition. The project, called Ferrari: New Concepts for the Myth, will see students from four of the world's best car design schools compete to design future models of Ferrari Cars. Four winning designs will be chosen and the students behind them will be offered work experience at Ferrari or Pininfarina, providing a prestigious springboard for the future.

The schools selected by Ferrari alongside Coventry are the Art Center (sic) College of Design of Pasadena, the Tokyo Communication Arts and the European Institute of Design in Turin. Students from Coventry University's MA Automotive Design course will have total creative freedom while working on the project, although their design will have to retain the recognisable features of the Ferrari marque. Course tutor Nick Hull said: "This is a dream project for our students and we welcome the recognition by Ferrari for our course". The students have been given a tight brief. They should bring innovation in both style and function to the external and internal volumes of the car. The five best models, which will be 1:4 scale, from each school will be chosen in July and will be judged by a technical panel including the Ferrari Styling Committee and the top Management of Pininfarina. Four winners will be picked from the final 20 and a selected number of Ferrari customers and automotive readers will evaluate the desirability of these models. Could a Coventry Uni student produce a successor to the magnificent Enzo? Here's hoping. |
