Coventry City

The Jaguar will not roar at the arena

Have your say on Jaguar's about turn

Coventry City's new stadium won't be known as the Jaguar Arena after the car manufacturers pulled out of the multi-million pound deal. Let us know what you think and who you think should step in instead.

Jaguar has withdrawn its main sponsorship of the Coventry Arena resulting in the potential loss of millions of pounds for the development.

It also means the Coventry Arena won't now be called the Jaguar Arena when Coventry City move there next season.

The news comes just three months after the announcement that Jaguar's parent company Ford, is to end car production at the Brown's Lane site in Coventry.

In a statement, Jaguar said the sponsorship situation had changed to take into account the rapid deterioration of Jaguar's business situation.

It's not known how much sponsorship money will be lostover the breakdown in the deal but it's thought to be around £7 million.

However, in a new deal Jaguar will sponsor of the exhibition halls at the Arena instead.

The chief executive of Coventry Arena, Paul Fletcher, said he welcomed the continued involvement with Jaguar and says the arena was still on course to open next summer.

The search is now on for a new sponsor which will lend its name to the arena.

What do you think of Jaguar's decision? Was it inevitable, given the closure of Browns Lane? Would you prefer another sponsor after Jag's decision to leave Coventry behind? Who would you like to step in? Let us know below.

Whoever mentioned the Alfred Mcalpine stadium should know its now called the Galpharm stadium. Home of Huddersfield Town! wooh! anyway i only came on this website coz its part of my geography homework.

estamanana
I don't care as long as they keep making them

James Brown
The Gasworks arena/stadium sounds quite fitting or holbrooks arena. enevitebly it will b called the tesco stadium or at the very best the tesco sponsered whatever arena. mayb it should be dedicated 2 whoever scores the last goal at highfield road so it could be then konjic arena.

The Godiva Stadium or The Phoenix Arena would be ideal. The Phoenix Stadium may get the nod, to reflect our rise from the ashes, not after WW2, but when we get promoted from the Coca Cola League One at the end of next season.

it is no surprise to me the way FORD go about there buisness thay have done this kind of thing before. it should be called peugeot stadium pheonix park

Good to have a forum on this matter. In truth Jaguar had no alternative other than to pull out.But it speaks volumes for the city for the project to continue and full credit to everyone invoved.Let's hope that once this magnificent complex is completed it will inspire the players to show that little of extra pride.Regarding the name William Lyons choose a magnificent name for his magnificent cars and it would have been a fitting tribute to the stadium, obviously now this can no longer be,but please, please now we have a clean slate let us avoid the temporary nature of another corporate name. For all the reasons stated on the bullitan board the glaringly obvious name must be The Pheonix Arena or Stadium (The City that rose from the ashes). After all The Emirates Stadium ,Brittania Stadium,Alfred mcAlpine Stadium,Williamson Motors Stadium could all be anywhere and don't even mention The Kit-Kat Crescent.(Arenal,Stoke City,Huddersfield Town.Darlington,York City)

we dont even need a new stadium because we cant fill the one we have already got!

After the closure of Browns Lane is was obvious that Jag would pull out of the new stadium. As to what it should be called, its got to be either the Sky Blue arena or the Phoenix arena.

Paul
The arena should be named in honour of the club, not after a business, ie sky blue arena or 1987 arena.

Anthony Duggan
i think the arena should be called the Phoenix Arena as it is on Phoenix Way and there is a Phoenix on the Sky Blues badge and don't forget we live in the city that was rebuilt from the ashes like a phoenix is born again from its ashes

Tony
The Rewster Arena sounds good

Fiona
I am glad about this. I think that Rover or Peugeot.

ben dover
i think it should not be managed by jaguar because ford will thyink they own it.

Get goose bumps each time I drive by the new stadium. It will be an amazing landmark for this City, something to be proud of. It will attract a big name sponsor. Credit to the council for getting on with the job. Up the Sky Blues !

glad the jag won't be the main sponsors......how about subaru? this stadium is fast becoming a nightmare....dred the team's fortunes their. jag were clever in associating themselves with the new stadium...as most people will still call it the jag arena.

Had to smile at the comments from Martin. Good to know cynacism is alive and well. Far from being a fiasco; the stadium is a triumph. No doubt Martin and his ilk would have thrown the towel in years ago; fortunately however the people behind the arena have vision, and despite all the setbacks (of which there have been many); they have simply dusted themselves down and got on with it. Fact is, next August we will have a terrific new facility opening on what for years was a wasteland. It will be a landmark facility that everyone in the city will benefit from. Even now it appears that the whingers have no idea of the scale of the development. Concerts, sports events, exhibitions, jobs, do we really need these? Er...yes please. Also, to complain about the transport links is laughable. Visit Pride Park, St Mary's, Walkers Stadium, The Riverside and The Stadium of Light (which clearly Martin hasn't) and you'll find that the new Arena has better transport links than all of them, even without the station. Finally, if you want to see what a development like this can do for a city; take a look at the KC Stadium in Hull (also council owned). The stadium is smaller and hasn't half the faclities our Arena will have; yet it has lifted a city and everyone from Hull I have spoken to is justifiably proud of it. So cheer up Martin, its Christmas.

Martin
My God, what a pathetic bunch of comments from people. Jaguar are making a loss, and simply cannot justify spending 7 million on Arena sponsorship. Why is anyone surprised by this? Ford aren't removing Jaguar completely from Coventry. It's corporate HQ is still Brown's Lane, and the engineering centre is still at Whitley. The whole development of this arena has become a fiasco - built for a team that can't afford it and funded by the council, poor transport links and no sign of a station, a downsized and dreary design from the original, and another bland retail park. Maybe it should be sponsored by the Krankies.

Mike Smith
RE: Steve Mates. Jaguar and Ford still fund hundreds of jobs throughout Coventry which are more important than the name of a casino. What investment do VW have in the UK?

Alex Barker
It was inevitable that Jaguar would pull out of sponsoring the stadium. Bit ironic with Jaguar stopping production in Coventry to have the stadium named after them isn't it? I haven't got a clue who should sponsor the new stadium.....Peugeot perhaps?

john osborne
I am glad about this. Coventry has been let down by the Jag. Management. Maybe Peugot could consider sponsorship.

Charlie
How about renaming it "The Lyon's Arena" in tribute to the man who bought so much employment to the city for 53 years. AND Burnley and the like are going to be terrified of coming to the Lyons Den aren't they ?.....

karl cook cov city lifetime fan
i think it is appauling that jag started sponsoring the arena and now have stopped losin jag would be like ripping the heart out of coventry

Steve Mates, Coventry
I was about to go out a buy a new S type, not anymore i'm getting a Golf. Don't buy FORD or JAG let's teach them!!

Michael Barnwell
Regretfully this was an inevitable consequence of recent events. It would have been incongruous to have 'The Jaguar Stadium'as the City's premier venue in the light of Ford's decision to remove it's plants from Coventry. Perhaps Peugeot would be a more than adequete alternative.

Ian Sutherland
When jaguar announced it was to sponsor the arena it appeared they were leaving a legacy in the city after announcing the closure of the Browns lane factory, withdrawing this sponsorship is a kick in the teeth to the people of Coventry, though why should Ford care, I suggest that everyone associated with the city SHOULD NEVER BUY A FORD AGAIN

Elaine
I think Peugeot should be the main sponsor, after all they've been in Coventry for as long as I remember
