Coventry & Warwickshire sportsmen and women were celebrated at the BBC Midlands Sport Awards which were held at the Belfry on Sunday, 5 December 2004. Honoured at the awards was the blind athlete from Leamington Spa, Bob Matthews. Matthews was inducted into The Hall of Fame after winning eight Paralympic gold medals.

Matthews is in good company – he joins the likes of Sir Stanley Matthews, Ann Jones and Tom Graveney. Coventry sprinter Marlon Devonish shared a World Beater award with Mark Lewis-Francis for their gold medal winning efforts in the sprint relay at the Olympics in Athens back in August. Unfortunately the Godiva Harrier wasn’t able to be at the ceremony. He had a good excuse – he was training! And good on him because we want to celebrate more Devonish success’ in the future.

Coventry's former world record-holder Dave Moorcroft says the 4x100 metres relay final will be remembered for a long time. More success came from the Olympic in the shape of Naomi Folkard who received the BBC Coventry & Warwickshire Breakthrough Award. She reached the last 16 in the Olympic archery. Other winners were Warwickshire's cricketers who were voted Team of the Year...with the batsman Ian Bell awarded the Birmingham Breakthrough Award.
