Scarecrows fundraise in Week St Mary
Farmer Scarecrow
Scaring crows and driving tractors in Week St Mary!

First it was Tideford, the royal scarecrows in Lanreath and now the scarecrows have been spotted in Week St Mary!

Villager Lesley Booker has sent in this special report.

Week St Mary Scarecrow Festival was a resounding success with hundreds of visitors coming to the village over the week to see the 52 Scarecrows that have been set up by the residents.

The Scarecrows range from the very tiny (under 6" tall) to man sized and can be found in all sorts of locations including on roof tops, in gardens, stuck in 'quicksand', garening, resting, skiing etc.

The people of Week St Mary have certainly exercised their imaginations and a great deal of ingenuity has gone into their creations.

All the scarecrows have been invited to stay in the church once they have been removed after the festival and to remain there until Week St Mary Revel on 21st September.

There are plans to display them once more as a tableau in the Revel Harvest Queen's Procession and the Champion Scarecrow will lead that procession.

Following the successful Scarecrow Festival at Week St Mary, the villages' visiting Scarecrows were invited by the Rector, Revd Rob Dickenson to take a well earned rest in the Parish Church.

They were offered an all expenses paid holiday for four weeks interrupted for only one hour on Sundays, in order that they might wait until the Week St Mary Revel and be able to be present at the Revel Service on Sunday 23rd September at which the preacher will be the Bishop of St Germans, the Very Reverend Roy Screech.

The scarecrow congregation
The scarecrows have settled well in the village and attend church!

Approximately 50 of the Scarecrows have accepted this offer so far and the Family Service of 1st September, led by Revd John Cotton was their first experience of worshp in the church.

They behaved impeccably and were welcomed with great enthusiasm by the regular congregation.

The Festival was a competition judged by how much money the scarecrow creators could raise. The winner was 'Jubilee Joe', created by village Postmaster Jeff Roberts who raised £51 for the Revel Fund.

More Week St Mary Scarecrows
The surf's up for one of the village scarecrows!

The total raised by the Festival was over £750. Many thanks to all who attended the Festival from far and wide and helped to make it such a special week in Week St Mary.

If you have spotted scarecrows in your village send us in a collection of photographs and we will feature them within our village pages.
