Villagers 'build' their own hall

St Keyne Village Hall came to be thanks to hardworking villagers

The village of St Keyne has a village hall that is rarely out of use.

For many years the village of St Keyne near Liskeard had a very small hall in which to hold meetings.

The village has grown over the years and soon the hall became too small, and it was starting to suffer from old age.

A meeting was held to discuss the possibility of a new village hall. Michael Kormanic attended, but never realised how that meeting would change his life.

" I went to a meeting where the idea of a new village hall was discussed as the old one was falling to pieces," remembers Michael.

"I said that a new village hall was needed and work must start immediately, so I was asked to take it on. The first thing I did at each meeting was to get the village committee to put their hand in their pockets and dig out a pound per member at every get together. That still continues to this day. It really started the ball rolling."

From that day on there were community get togethers which involved planning events and hours of filling in forms for funding.

"Every time we had an event to raise money, more villagers came forward to show an interest," says Michael.

"When it comes to asking for volunteers for specific jobs, people often sit on their hands," smiles Michael.

"I decided to give people different jobs to do. Villagers did a marvellous job raising money for their hall."

While the residents of St Keyne were organising events and slowly building up the funds for the hall, Michael was busy planning ideas for bigger cheques.

"The parish is the second smallest one in the county, so I thought that I would call on the lottery fund," reveals Michael. "I remember saying 'look at all these people fundraising on their own, for a village hall in a tiny parish'. Slowly we managed to get more funding."

It took 12 years from the initial meeting but now St Keyne has a village hall to be proud of.

To this day the village hall is rarely empty. There are many groups who are based in the hall. The village committee organise many events for residents to enjoy. The village hall is also home of the local history group. Find out more about St Keyne local history group.
