Over 100 gigs take part in the annual World Pilot Gig championships on the Isles of Scilly in May. Hundreds take part and thousands come as spectators. More than a quarter of the long wooden rowing boats were built by one man. Ralph Bird from Devoran near Truro is credited by many as the man who made gig racing what it is today.
