FACTS

The Buntabout has been running every year for the past 24 years.

The contest is run by Steve Bunt who got sick of travelling to Newquay to enter contests so he set up his own local contest in TR5.

The onshore winds and choppy 3ft surf at this years Buntabout surf contest wasn't enough to put off more than 100 competitors from across the region from entering the event.

Local lad Jonny Marshall was one of the many who descended on St Agnes over the weekend of 15/16 October for the prestigious surf contest.

And the grommet was ripping, he surfed his way to first place in the Under 12s Grommets final in difficult surf conditions.

Having already won the four-man Groms final, Jonny went into the Under 14s heat with high hopes. But though he surfed well performing some excellent manoeuvres, Marcus Lascelles pipped him to the top spot in the final.

Late entry Josh Ward scored highly for his heat in the Under 18s and went on to win the final by scoring high in his best three waves against fellow competitors Ryan Manetta and Charlie Garland.

Josh also did extremely well in the Open event coming a not-to-disapointing third place, behind Jamie Hicks and overall winner Robin Kent, who took home the silverware.

Local girl Nicola Bunt came close to winning the Ladies Open event but being beaten in the final by British Longboard Champion Dominique Munroe. Dominique was aslo pleased with the performance from the Girls Surf Academy with over 30 girls of all ages who entered the competition.

Emily Anderson who came second in the under 12s won the Mimi Wilson Memorial trophy which is awarded for outstanding ability in both surfing and surf life saving.

Special thanks go to Keith Slack, Rory Bushe and Pete Roberts for the film show after event which featured the remarkable 8-12ft, Hawaiian style surf conditions of the 2002 Buntabout.
