The beautiful tiered fountain in the town centre

The pedestrianised zone in Camborne is not only home to historical buildings but also the impressive fountain which is a meeting place for many locals.

Lamp Standard
The lamp standard dates back to 1890

Return back along Tehidy Road and Fore Street. Turn left into Trelowarren Street. On the right you will arrive at Commercial Square. The centre-point of this area is an impressive tiered fountain.

On the top is a lamp standard. which was presented to the town by John Holman of Camborne Veor in 1890. This was the terminus of the Camborne and Redruth Tramway and where the Commercial Hotel was sited. Today, the Square has been pedestrianised.

Literary Institute
Camborne's Literary Institute

On the edge of Commercial Square you will find another example of fine Cornish architecture in the form of the Donald Thomas Centre. It is a pillared building, with an old granite cross in the forecourt. The centre was built in 1842 for the Literary Institute to rehouse its library and museum.

From Commercial Square, go right into Trelowarren Street towards the Centenary Chapel at the end.

Look above the ground floor shopfronts there are many examples of fine Cornish buildings along this road.
