BBC Cornwall Surfing Correspondent Simon Allexander reports from the line up.

It was the first time many of those in the line up had ever tackled the Cribbar, which breaks at the north end of Fistral Beach, in Newquay.

Joining the pair were former Plymouth Marjohns student Dan "mole" Joel, Russell Mullins, Newquay fireman Nathaniel Hooton and James Mitchell from Wavelength Magazine.

The January session, in waves ranging from 15 to 18 feet, was caught on film by Cornish photographer Geoff Tydeman and moviemaker Lee Evans.

A jet ski was on hand to tow in surfers on third reef Cribbar, while those sitting further inside on second reef paddled into their waves.

Tydeman, who's latest film Fistral Sessions features previously unseed footage of the Cribbar, said the waves breaking at low tide packed a punch: "it was really teamwork in action out there, they all worked together. It was the first time many had surfed the place and they didn't have the confidence to go out there alone. The teamwork worked really well.

"The presence of the jet ski being used both as a tow in vehicle and as an on-site rescue vehicle meant the surfers were willing to take greater risks than they might have done by attempting the Cribbar solo. In fact only one surfboard was snapped and the owner was given a ride to Little Fistral astride the jet ski," added Geoff.

The Cribbar has been ridden a handful of times in recent years and was recently featured in a national newspaper which focussed on South African surfer Chris Bertish.

BRITTON IN WQS ACTION DOWN UNDER

Irish international Easkey Britton is one of two Europeans in action at the opening women's World Qualifying Series event of the season in Australia.

Britton is seeded into round two of the 4star Roxy Pro at Phillip Island against Hawaiian Alana Brennan and Aussie Renee Hyman.

Sofia Mulanovich

The County Donegal surfer is guaranteed a top 60 finish win or lose.

The third round opponent of France's Caroline Sarran is Stephanie Gilmore, from Australia.

The home nation are well represented through reigning WQS champion Chelsea Georgeson, Melanie Redman-Carr and Pauline Menczer.

World champion Sofia Mulanovich earns an automatic place in the last 32 and is pitted against Jaimee Wheatley.
