Winter was on course for a quarter-final place at the 4star World Qualifying Series event at Fistral Beach.

But the British number one was undone by Bryson's late charge and had to settle for equal 17th place overall and 600 ranking points.

Winter, who had earlier won his opening round four heat, gauge his way across the 2ft lefthanders at North Fistral.

On any other day it would have been enough for the 2002 Boardmasters champion to secure a comfortable ride into the next round.

As it was, Bryson's last-ditch effort paid off and he won the heat ahead of Reunion Island's Jeremy Flores, with Winter back in third.

Bryson went on to finish third in the final behind Brazilian Renato Galvao with Australian Luke Munro runner-up.

Fellow Newquay surfer Mark Harris never quite found his feet against South African Travis Logie and Australian Christo Hall in his round four heat.

The ex BPSA champion, who was given a wildcard into the main event, will be aiming to recapture his form ahead of the UK pro tour this autumn.

In the women's 5star WQS Nokia Pro final, wave selection played a major part in Australian Chelsea Georgeson's second pro victory in a month.

The surf struggled to make the 2 foot mark making it difficult for the finalists to show off their surfing repertoire.

Georgeson, who knocked out defending champion Emmanuelle Joly Thomas, from France, in the semis, pulled on all her small wave experience to win the final.

Fellow countrywoman Samantha Cornish was runner-up with Melanie Redman-Carr third.

The result gives Georgeson a narrow 135 point lead at the top of the world rankings from Redman-Carr after nine events.

In Japan, Brazilian Neco Padaratz's second place finish at the men's 6star WQS Tahara Pro was enough to hold on to top spot in the world rankings.

The Brazilian was defeated at Akabane Beach in an all South American final by Armando Daltro.

Finishing fourth overall, Marcelo Nunes remains in striking distance of Padaratz after 20 events.

Portugeuse champion Tiago Pires and Frenchman Eric Rebiere were the top placed Europeans. Both were beaten at the semi-final stage.

Current men's WQS standings after 21 events.
1 Neco Padaratz, Brazil, 9,825 points.
2 Marcelo Nunes, Brazil 8,280.
3 Greg Emslie, South Africa, 8,033.
4 Luke Stedman, Australia, 7,695.
5 Raoni Monteiro, Brazil, 7,620.
34 Russell Winter, GB, 4,861.

Current women's WQS standings after 9 events.
1 Chelsea Georgeson, Australia, 6,000 points.
2 Melanie Redman-Carr, Australia, 5,865.
3 Serena Brooke, Australia, 5,456.
4 Pauline Menczer, Australia, 5,320.
5 Heather Clark, South Africa, 5,290.
