Restormel
Arts’ spring jazz programme brings the Tim Richards Trio to St Austell.
The London based pianist is the founder member of one of the most
influential and original modern jazz groups, Spirit Level, and has
remained indisputably at the forefront of the British jazz scene for
over twenty years.
Tim will be promoting his Trio’s recently released 2nd CD 'Twelve
by Twelve' with the new line up of Dominic Howles (bass) and Matt
Home (drums). The CD features a selection of numbers by musicians
such as Gene Harris, Horace Silver, Billy Taylor and Abdullah Ibrahim,
plus a couple of Richards originals.
The intimate nature of the trio gives Tim a chance to explore his
roots in blues, bebop and hard-bop as the band plays hard swinging
blues, lyrical ballads (When Sunny Gets Blue), the Afro-Cuban flavours
of Dizzy Gillespie’s Manreca and the lilting rhythms of Ahmed Jamal’s
Poinciana.

modern jazz groups, 'Spirit Level' |
Tim has
been active on the jazz scene since 1979 when he formed Spirit Level.
During its twenty-year history this band played at clubs and festivals
all over Europe and released seven albums.
In 1999 the band was expanded to a nine piece, and released the acclaimed
Great Spirit with a line up including Denys Baptiste and Gilad Atzmon.
Tim has also had extensive blues experience, touring and recording
with Otis Grand, Earl Green, Dana Gillespie plus US greats guitarist
Joe Louis Walker, Mojo Buford and Larry Garner.
Dominic Howles first came to prominence with the Tommy Chase Quartet
in 1990 since when he has played with many top names including Stan
Sultzmann, Alan Skidmore, Christine Tobin and Clark Tracey.
He can currently be heard in Tim Whitehead’s Quartet. Matt Home has
been heard recently with Stacey Kent at Ronnie Scott’s Club, and is
fast making a name for himself on the London scene. He has played
with great names such as Don Weller, Jim Mullen, Alan Barnes, Tina
May and Bobby Wellins.
Tim’s style has been described as ‘a unique mixture formed from his
admiration of both the expansive, robust playing of McCoy Tyner and
the luminous delicacy of Abdullah Ibrahim’ (The Times).
This will be a night of the finest jazz, so don’t miss it!
