Work
and planning of the new skate park started in August 2003 and the
American style sunken skate bowl was completed and officailly opened
in time for Christmas 2004. The opening of the bowl was seen as
a thank you to the youth of Penzance.
Penwith
District Council invited three skaters from the region to try out
the bowl and give their verdict on design and construction.
Their
comments were "Magnificent","The best Bowl that I
have ever skated" and " It is so quiet".
The
Princess May skate park is on the Treneere Estate opposite the Humphry
Davy School in Penzance, and it is anticipated that phase one of
the development will be complete by Easter 2005.
The
terrain
The skate park facility, when complete, will be unique in the UK
and will include varying types of terrain, designed to allow beginners
through to advance skaters to practice the sport.
The
terrain includes bowls at a maximum depth of 2.13m, kerbs, ledges,
grinding blocks and peripheral street items.
The
more advanced features will be located within the centre of the
bowl and the beginner features around the edges of the facility.
The skate park will not only serve the local community but will
also act as the Council's flagship skate park in Penwith.
Penwith
Council will hold a formal opening ceremony on completion of Phase
one, where they will be inviting their funding partners and community
partners to a skate park jamboree, to include workshops and competitions
for all levels of skaters.
