Trevenson Church

Trevenson at 200

A Church in West Cornwall is about to start its bicentennial celebrations. This year Trevenson Church in Pool turns 200 years old and to celebrate its birthday is hosting a series of celebratory events in the parish throughout the summer.

Trevenson church in Pool has been open to worshippers for quite some time now and this month the church begins the celebrations of its bicentenary.

Trevenson Church

Inside Trevenson Church

The church was first opened In 1809 by Dr Pelham, the Bishop of Exeter, who had spent the previous night at Tehidy House, also present at the opening was the church's land provider Lord de Dunstanville.

At the time of the opening Napoleon was causing problems for Wellington in Europe and Trevithick and Murdock were Cornish household names. Since then the church has had a tower attached to it and the community around it has grown in its thousands.

The church was built to support the growing population in the area which before the church was built was just over 2000, however a few years after its opening the population of the parish stood at 4078.

The then 'chapel-of-ease' was built on the west field of Treloweth Wartha Farm. This field and 20 acres of the surrounding land was purchased from the Lord Falmouth by Lord de Dunstanville of Tehidy Park, who financed the building of the chapel, gifting it to the parish together with the rent of the remaining land at a staggering forty-two pounds per year.

The church is organising a whole range of events as part of its celebration. The 2009 festivities include a blessing by the bishop, performances by Lanner Town Band and Carn Brea Morris Men, a flower festival and a united parish service with all three of the parish churches.
