Trevenson church in Pool has been open to worshippers for quite some time now and this month the church begins the celebrations of its bicentenary. To find out what the church has planned for the bicentenary BBC Cornwall's James Miners travelled to the old building in the parish of Illogan and spoke to Reverend Sharon Clifton about the celebrations. At the time of the opening Napoleon was causing problems for Wellington in Europe and Trevithick and Murdock were Cornish household names. Since then the church has had a tower attached to it and the community around it has grown in its thousands. The church was built to support the growing population in the area which before the church was built was just over 2000, however a few years after its opening the population of the parish stood at 4078. The then 'chapel-of-ease' was built on the west field of Treloweth Wartha Farm. This field and 20 acres of the surrounding land was purchased from the Lord Falmouth by Lord de Dunstanville of Tehidy Park, who financed the building of the chapel, gifting it to the parish together with the rent of the remaining land at a staggering forty-two pounds per year. On his visit to the church James Miners spoke to church Verger Margaret Martin who has been involved with Trevenson Church for 82 years. The 2009 festivities include a blessing by the bishop, performances by Lanner Town Band and Carn Brea Morris Men, a flower festival and a united parish service with all three of the parish churches. ![]() Sharon and Margret from Trevenson Church The church is also appealing for peoples memories and pictures of the church from over the years for an exhibition to go with the celebrations.
