Lianna, Simon and the Rickshaw

Rickshaw Record Ride

A couple will be setting off from Cornwall on a world record cycle attempt. Simon Etkind and Lianna Hulbert will be riding 1500 kilometres in 24 days from Lands End to Suffolk riding on a rickshaw to raise money for an Indian charity.

Simon and Lianna who are both 24 are going to be riding on a Rickshaw on a 932 mile (1500 Kilometre) journey from Lands End in Cornwall to Lowestoft in Suffolk. The journey will be from Britain's most Westerly to Easterly point.

The record attempt which is being verified by Guinness will raise funds for UK-based development charity Action Village India (AVI). The organisation supports six partner organisations across India that offer training and support to over 300 self-help groups. These community groups provide support for poor and disadvantaged members of Indian society.

When speaking about the challenge Lianna said: "One person will pedal, while the other will do the map reading. We'll swap every hour or so, so both of us get a chance to put our feet up."

The couple, who will soon be getting married, are fundraising for AVI after Lianna visited one of it's support groups on a gap year in India.

A Rickshaw is a three-wheeled bike with a covered carriage for passengers. There are an estimated 7 million rickshaws in use in India. The average rickshaw driver in India makes just under a pound a day unless they own their own rickshaw, otherwise a driver will have to give back about half of this back in rent.

Speaking about the different ways Rickshaws are used around the world, Lianna said: "For us, pedalling a rickshaw is an amazing way to spend a month together on the open road, journeying and camping across southern England.

"But in India pedalling a rickshaw is a hard earned living. It's the knowledge that what we're doing might help lift some people out of poverty that will keep me going as I pant and sweat towards the finish line."
