Cricket on Everest

Everest Cricket

A man from Cornwall has led a team of cricket fans into the record books for playing a field sport at the highest altitude. Gareth Wesley, who grew up in Falmouth, came up with the idea of playing a Twenty20 match 5000 metres up Mount Everest.

The group of 50 from all over the UK climbed for 9 days through the Himalayas to reach Everest Base Camp.

They played cricket on the Gorak Shep plateau almost 5,000 metres above sea level. They had to take everything with them, even the pitch.

The location of the wicket was at more than twice the altitude professional footballers are allowed to play at. Gareth says that's what posed the biggest challenge: "You're looking at only 60% of the oxygen that you get down at sea level so just taking one run between the wickets was pretty much leaving you breathless."

The 2 teams playing the match were called Hillary and Tenzing, after Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Vorvag, the first people to reach the summit of Everest in their 1953 expedition. Team Hillary won.

But this was about much more then just breaking a record. The expedition raised more than £250,000 for the charities, Lord Taverners and the Himalayan Trust UK.

Lord Taverners helps young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, or with physical disabilities, to get involved in cricket and other sports.

The Himalayan Trust UK was set up by Sir Edmund Hillary to support the Sherpas who helped him in his first ascent to Everest.

Gareth says: "We've been blown away by how Napal has embraced this event. We've been front page news in pretty much every paper for the last 2 months. They're really proud and see this as a great achievement."
