A Cornish flag flies in Looe

Calling Cornish Cousins

The massive Dehwelans Festival promoting all things Cornish kicks off in Looe. The event includes live performances, plays, days out and the annual Cornish Gorsedd ceremony. Retrace your family roots and sample Cornish culture and hospitality.

The historic fishing port of Looe is the home to the Dehwelans Festival, which means homecoming in Cornish.

From Monday 1 September the south east Cornwall town is hosting a weeklong variety of events.

The Crowders

Plenty of music to enjoy

Cousin Jacks and Jennies will be making the trip to south east Cornwall to enjoy the many varied events planned for the festival.

It's difficult to glean how many people will be coming to the port. Over six million people worldwide are of Cornish descent!

Festival co-ordinator Edwina Arkell says: "The Dehwelans Festival is an opportunity to encourage the descendants of Cornish miners, as well as the considerable UK Cornish community to retrace their family roots and sample a piece of Cornish culture and hospitality."

A large performance marquee will play host to a variety of concerts and shows.

Highlights include:

The St Piran's Singers who will be performing Monday 1st September 7.30pm - 9pm Riverside Church, West Looe everything from Westlife to Queen, Evita to Les Miserables, and other popular songs that always include Cornish themed items.

The Looe Youth Theatre will be performing musical entitled 'Return to the Forbidden Mineshaft'. It is based on the traditions and myths of Cornish mining areas. Set in Victorian times, the musical tells the tale of a Cornish family who have stewardship of land which has been regarded as sacred from generations past.

It will be performed at the Dehwelans Gala on Friday 5 September in the Millpool Performance Marquee, in West Looe at 7pm.

The annual Cornish Gorsedd will also take place in Looe during the festival. The ceremony happens on Saturday 6 September, attracting Cornish Bards from all over the world.

Dehwelans will also host children's entertainment, local produce market, a photographic exhibition, family history studies and much more.

The Dehwelans Festival takes place from Monday 1 until Sunday 7 September 2008.
