Their tales of battles of the past will be told to children visiting the castle during July and August... Tintagel is a place of magic and myth where the legend of King Arthur was born. This historic spot is rich in flora and fauna and provides a breeding ground for sea birds, lizards and butterflies. Tintagel Castle is Cornwall’s most iconic site. ![]() Tintagel Island, home to the castle With its spectacular location on one of the South West's most dramatic coastlines, Tintagel is an awe-inspiring and romantic spot, a place of legends. If you visit the historic castle over the summer don't be surprised if you bump into some well loved characters. A storyteller dressed as the magical and mysterious Merlin, will be weaving tales from the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table at regular intervals from late July 2008. ![]() An actor will play Merlin Find Merlin lurking in the castle courtyard dressed in his eccentric attire and listen as he narrates a series of charming tales of Camelot, Excalibur and the Knights of the Round Table. These much loved stories will be told every Wednesday and Thursday until 28 August. Hear tall tales of adventurous exploits and ferocious battles as King Arthur and his trusted Merlin recall old friends and foes of Medieval England. Joined to the mainland by a narrow neck of land, Tintagel Island faces the full force of the Atlantic. On the mainland itself, the gaunt remains of the medieval castle represent only one phase in a long history of occupation. ![]() Merlin's Cave in Tintagel After a period of Roman settlement and military outpost, Tintagel is thought to have been a trading settlement of Celtic kings during the 5th and 6th Centuries, however it is best known for its mythical links with the conception of King Arthur. The remains of the 13th Century castle are breathtaking, with the steep stone steps, stout walls and rugged windswept cliff edges encircling the Great Hall.
