Perth's swan river from Kings Park

Cornwall to Australia

Marcus grew up in Falmouth but left at the age of 17 to Bristol in search of work. After moving several times, Marcus finally settled in Perth, Australia and feels that Cornwall is definitely one of those places that you take for granted.

Marcus' story...

I was born in Falmouth in 1969 and mis-spent my youth there before leaving for Bristol in 1986. My father had died and my mother moved there. Although I'd worked at Meanporth Beach Cafe, I don't think there was really a job for me in Cornwall.

It was pretty lonely in Bristol and I used to spend all my time out running. I then joined the Marines and lived in Exeter, Plymouth and Portsmouth.

In 1996 I left the Marines and moved into IT, living in Aylesbury. It was quite odd being 100 miles from the coast! The fish and chips were pathetic - never knew how lucky we were in Falmouth in that regard (beautiful white billowy cod). :)

Then went to work for IBM Holland in the Netherlands and then out to Sydney Australia. Now I live in Perth, West Australia.

What do I miss ... :) Where do I start. I miss all the places I used to spend time in Falmouth: Swanpool, Gyllyngvase Beach, around Marlborough House, etc. Cornwall is definitely one of those places, that you take for granted and then wish you could pop 'round all those places. Pasties is definitely another thing I miss, although my wife makes a pretty good one. Cornish ice cream, with Rhodda Clotted Cream. English chips (potatoes), Shredded Wheat (okay that ain't cornish!).
