Team Saquish Rowing Club launched its first gig, 'Saquish', on 4 July 1996 at Saquish Beach, Plymouth, Mass. Back then there were only two other gig clubs in New England. When it began the club had just seven men. In May 1997 they were invited to the World Championships on the Isles of Sciily, in the borrowed gig 'Socoa'. They went again in May 1998, again having use of 'Socoa' but this year took along their wives!

The second gig was launched in 1998, 'Mike Jenness, Sr', named after one of our club's founding father's, Mike Jenness Sr. Mike Sr. and Mike Jr. built 'Saquish' in 1996 and started a second gig shortly after Mike Sr. was diagnosed with cancer in 1998. Mike Sr. died in June 1998 and Mike Jr. finished building the gig and named it after his father. With the launch of the 'Jenness' the club expanded to include a women’s team. In 2000 our club expanded further to include a youth team. Our third gig, 'The Interceptor' was built in 2003. In November 1999 both a men's crew and ladies crew went to Holland to race at Muiden, borrowing the 'Ann Glanville' from Caradon Gig Club.

The men's crew went to IOS again in 2001 and 2002, rowing in the Cape Cornwall in 2001 and the Irene in 2002. In September 2001 the ladies crew were meant to go to the Great River Race in London but 9/11 happened and the crew that had trained for six months never got to go. The following September four members of the original crew were able to go and joined with two Cornish ladies to form a team and rowed that race. In 2006 one of our men rowed in the Newquay Championships with Penryn Gig Club. The club does both recreational rowing and races. They attend many races throughout New England, rowing year round as weather permits. In 2007 there are 26 gigs spread over Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine and Connecticut, with approximately 10 gig clubs. |
