Lighthouse

Cape Three Points

Chris Ryan
Chris is a longboarder from West Cornwall. He decided to forego the cold Cornish winter surf in favour of the warmer climes and waters of Ghana. Read his African surf trip diaries.

Since my last email I almost bought a tractor for transportation but instead decided to stick to my trusty bicycle and 'Inspector Gadget' suitcase/trailer.

cooking by lighthouse

I headed down 20k of unmade road to Cape Three Points lighthouse where I stayed for seven nights and surfed the reefs below for seven days straight. It was four foot and clean every day (my guesswork payed off. This is meant to be the "flat" season but how can it be calm when straight down it's all ocean 'till you reach Antarctica!?)

It was  just me and the lighthouse keeper "Charles" we had a great laugh all week he's a star, he even put up a Cornish flag next to the Ghana one (a spare cousin Charly gave me from his ship).

Charles

At night it was epic . The light has eight beams and it was better than any laser light show. Then one night we had the beam plus lightning on the horizon and the stars and moon above. Every evening was a spectacle.

I didn't see any Westerners for five days let alone any other surfers. The villagers beside the beach referred to me as "The white man that has a bath all the time".

BUT, I am getting a little bored of surfing nice empty tropical waves (What am I saying?) on my own, couple that with an anti-malaria pill mistake by my GP leaving me short. I did eventually track down some more but it was ten quid per pill! So looks like I'm going to come home early.... and I am missing my mum.

I've just ordered mahogany engraved belly board from the local carpenter. Fifteen quid, happy with that. I've also read two yes two books the whole way through (faint!) Loving it out here but there's only so much rice and beans a man can take.
