Thrusters Diary

Love handles

Thruster
It's been the coldest winter for 10 years. Combine this with predominantly dire state of the waves (at least over the weeks I've been in the country) and you have a recipe for a stinker.

Facts about Thruster

Thruster didn't take up surfing until he was 19, but soon became hooked and was determined to let neither a late start, nor a remarkable dearth of natural talent stand in his way. Now aged 37 he still sincerely believes it is only a matter of time before he becomes world champion.

Also obsessed with snowboarding, at which he is marginally more impressive - he can stand up. Thruster has been writing surfing and extreme sports articles for 12 years. His next journalistic challenge is to write a good one.

Home Break: Gwithian

Surf Trips: Mexico, Costa Rica, Philippines, Fiji, Indonesia, NZ, Hawaii, Australia, South Africa, Canaries, Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland

Surfers' Ear Operations: 3 (but needs another)

Would love to live in: Galicia

Board: 6'4" x 18 ¾ rounded pin (and a 9'1" log when really desperate)

Standard: Easily one of the best in his cul-de-sac.

A stinker indeed it has been, and a stinker that has seen me father an impressive set of love-handles due to a slothful lack of exercise.

Last Sunday, I decided I had to get proactive and do something about it. With temperatures still showing no sign of improvement, I treated myself to a new hood.  An unconventional move in late March, but a necessary one to give me the kick-start I needed.

bike crash
The breaks were a tad harsh.

Next move: check the surf. I chose the hard-core route. I spent an hour repairing my sister's mountain bike and then pedalled the five miles from my house to the cliffs at Godrevy.

I hadn't been on a bike for years and my pathetic lack of fitness was clear testament to that. I wasn't discouraged. My comeback was underway. I'd spent 20 quid (rare) and ridden a bike (rarer). Surely my efforts would merit some decent waves.

Unfortunately there is no justice in this world and I could barely believe the sight that greeted me.

The sea was so flat that 2 swans were swimming just a few metres from the shore at Gwithian. I'm serious!  They'd obviously mistaken the glassy expanse of water for a lake!

Crestfallen, bitter and depressed, I rode the icy five miles home, flopped in front of the TV screen and found what comfort I could in a family size Fruit and Nut.
Mmmmmm... chocolate!
