The
Poldark saga...a series of novels by popular author Winston Graham...gripped
the nation when the BBC screened a TV adaptation some years ago.

Rees as Demelza Polsdark |
Even
today people still remember the heartwarming tales of Ross and Demelza
as they lived out
their
lives against the spectacular background of the Cornish cliffs and
moorland. The series is one of the most successful ever made. The
first series was shown back in 1975 but a video release in 1993
gained even more fans. The very episode showed Ross galloping across
the Cornish landscape on his return from the American War of Independence
and gained five million viewers.

Ross
shocked his neighbours by marrying Demelza the daughter of a miner.
His business deals bought him into conflict with the nouveau riche
George Warleggan who was to dog his foorsteps for many years. In
the feud Ross was always the kind landowner, generous with his tenants
and keen to see his beloved Cornwall do well. Now, the autobiography
of the man who wrote the entire Poldark saga has been published
by Macmillan as 'Memoirs of a Private Man'.

| Winston
Graham, author of the Poldark saga |
Winston
Graham had an extraordinary life and his writing career took him
well beyond the Poldark family. Few people know that it was he who
wrote the original story of 'Marnie' later made into an international
film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1964. He also wrote the British film
noir 'Fortune is a Woman'. In recent years Winston Graham wrote
the 12th volume in the saga 'Bella Poldark'.
