Welcome

DJs appearing in the county. First up meet top Cornish DJ Matt Exelby
|
 |
|
|
 |
Cornwall's
Matt Exelby has been taking his 'sexy vocal house' sets to many
top clubs, throughout Cornwall and into Spain.
He
was invited by the BBC to take part in Music Live to celebrate the
Queen's Golden Jubilee.
Matt
has now set up a website www.littlesouth.com
to promote clubbing and DJs in the South West. You can see profiles
of your favourite DJs, enjoy tonnes of pics and all the latest news
regarding clubbing in the region.
The
BBC Cornwall Clubbing team caught up with Matt and put him under
the spotlight for our first ever DJ profile. Read on!

Why
did you decide to set up your website
|
|
The
initial idea behind Littlesouth was to create a web-site that
published events & dance news for Cornwall. Since the launch
of Littlesouth, the site has grown to provide a chatroom,
photo gallery & now a 'Media Centre'!
|
|
What
are its aims
|
|
My
aims for Littlesouth were:
1. To give djs / local artists the opportunity to publicise
themselves online.
2. To provide dance news that is relevant to the people of
Cornwall (& the Southwest).
3. To initiate new events for Cornwall & give artists (djs/producers)
the opportunity to showcase themselves.
|
|
Why
did you decide to become a DJ
|
|
I
have always had an interest in music. I remember, even when
I was no older than six or seven, recording tracks from the
radio and trying to 'blend' them together.
I
consider my influences to include: Erick Morillo, Pete Tong,
Norman Cook & Annie Lennox! Usually, my sets will cater for
a wide variety of people - a complete mixture. I try to cater
for all generations - but with an up-to-date twist.
I
began to take mixing seriously at the age of 16, when I was
bought my first pair of turntables. My style has 'matured'
since then.
|
|
What
do you enjoy most about the job
|
|
The
thing I enjoy most when mixing is the ability to control the
atmosphere of an evening or period of time which a dj plays.
I get an enormous amount of satisfaction seeing crowds dancing
and having great times to my sets.
|
|
Where
are your dj'ing residencies, and which is your favourite
|
|
I
have had summer 2001 residencies in the Spanish resort of
Llorett De Marr - Tropic Discotheque & Moby's.
In Cornwall, I try to steer away from having 'residencies'
- I prefer to play in the open air at local events. I have
played at many bars and clubs in the Southwest (Shakers, Greenroom,
The Venue, Jesters etc).
|
What
tips would you give to people wanting to become DJs
|
|
Sit
back and consider your influences - this will help you in
defining your style and will allow you to select tunes which
suit you most. Don't buy a tune because it's being played
at every club - that tune's days are numbered!
|
What
are your ambitions for the future
|
|
I hope to continue with my work for
Littlesouth and to showcase Southwest talent. To spread the
word about Littlesouth!
