| When
did you become interested in DJ'ing |
|
I've been into music all my life listening
to stuff like Jimmy Hendrix when I was a young teenager.
I
originally wanted to form a band, play wembly stadium, change
people's lives with my lyrics.... But because I'm a terrible
singer and cant play any instrument very well I decided
the next best thing would be to DJ!
|
|
How
did you get started?
|
| The
DJ in our local nightclub didn't turn up. I ran home, got
my records and I haven't been back to my day job since! |
|
Tell
us about your first gig
|
It was the best thing on earth! I was
so very nervous trying to get every mix just right. Then I
looked at the crowd for the first time and everyone was dancing,
the floor was packed and people were looking at me smiling
and really feeling the music.
I
got this feeling of excitment and happiness in my stomache
and felt like I was on top of the world! I still get that
feeling, especially when I play a new record that I want
everyone to hear and people like it.
|
|
Where
can people catch you DJ'ing
|
|
I'm
playing five nights a week this year. I'm going to spend
my summer nights in The Sailors, The Beach Club, Red Square
& The Surf & Rock Bar & Cafe.
But
before I head over to the nightclubs I will be playing layed
back chill-out whilst the sun sets over Fistral Beach at
The Cribber Green Rooms.
|
| What
do you love most about your job? |
| Job?...
Because I have such a passion for music I don't think I really
have a job! I get to surf and laze on the beach all day then
play music in front of thousands of mad clubbers every week,
meet lots of great people and get payed for it! |
| Who
do you like to 'big-up' on your playlist |
|
I
love my alternative nights in Red Square on Thursdays.
My big-ups change on a weekly basis but this week Ive been
mostly listening to two amazing emo/rock bands 'Taking Back
Sunday' & 'My Chemical Romance'...
Expect big things!

|
Kai's
Top DJ Tips
|
|
I
think the main thing is just to keep at it and try to be
versatile.
For
example when I first moved to Newquay I only wanted to play
one particular genre of music and because there are so many
commercial clubs I found it impossible.
Now,
after a few years playing a broad selection of Dance, Hip
hop and RnB I've finally started to set up nights playing
what I want.
I
still have loads of fun playing the
commercial stuff but it's nice to have a night that you
can call your own!
|
| So
what's next for Kai Stafford? |
|
Ive
just designed a website that captures the whole Newquay
atmosphere:
www.newquaynightlife.com
Whats
next?
I
really want a job as a radio presenter, become a hugly famous
Dj, make friends with Hugh Hefner(!) buy a boat and maybe
sail to Tahiti.
WISH
ME LUCK!
