In
the words of Rolf Harris "Can you guess what it is yet?"
Well, I couldn't but that was because I hadn't been involved
in a week long summer school of extreme arts.
As
I walked into the school gym like area in the Gaia Energy
Centre in Delabole, I was confronted with monsters, dragons,
children dangling from the ceiling on ropes and an awful lot
of sticky back plastic and glue - Blue Peter, eat your heart
out!
It
was like an obsacle course of paper and wood, but everywhere
you looked there were smiling youngsters working on some creature
creation.
This
was of course the Extreme Arts Summer School where a team
professional artists were helping the 11 to 16 year olds to
make a magical stage set using animation, puppets, dance and
acrobatics.
William
Todd-Jones, who was a puppeteer in the Muppet Christmas Carol,
The Odyssey and Lost In Space was busy making a scaley dragon
whilst aerial artist, Robyn Simpson, was strining students
up in the air on special performing wires where they can perform
flips, splats and more.
The
aim of the week was to try and teach the students about the
environment, evolution, art and film whilst having fun. Most
of the students didn't even know that they were learning,
but were able to tell me about insects, animals and how special
effects are created in films.
The
week culminates on Friday 7th July with a journey into the
imaginary world that the 29 students have created using all
the props they have made during the five days.
