Ceramica
is an international festival of clay in the south west.
During Ceramica, galleries – both public & independent, museums
and ceramicists across the region have collaborated with St Ives
International to present a festival of exhibitions and events featuring
all kinds of works with clay.
 |
| Bernard
Leach |
The festival
is in homage to the legacy of Bernard Leach for which without him
Cornwall would not have such a unique association with ceramics.
Leach set up a ceramics workshop in St Ives in 1920 had a major influence
on 20th century studio pottery.
Twenty years since his death, this festival is an opportunity to show
the wealth of artists working with clay across the south west and
to acknowledge the ways in which they work and the groundbreaking
art that is being created within the region.
The programme of work ranges from traditional pots to sculpture, work
in the landscape to work in the studio.
The festival offers the public a chance to meet with these artists
through events such as Open studios. The public will also be given
the opportunity to engage with ceramics through a series of practical
workshops, educational activities and critical debates.
The festival takes place predominantly during the months of May, June
and July.
Although there are many events taking place across the region, here
are examples of two events.
Newlyn Art Gallery
The work on show at The Newlyn Art Gallery has been made specially
for the gallery by two leading contemporary artists from Japan.
Toshikatsu Endo proposed placing a circle of tall white vessels containing
water in the Upper Gallery. The piece refers to ritual and the significance
of the sacred place. Endo points out that the 'vessel holding water'
has been a symbol for the containment of thought in the human mind
for many centuries.

The artist Yukio Fujimoto, works with sound and particularly materials
which generate sound through user interaction. In the lower gallery
of the Newlyn, Fujimoto has installed a double layer of tiles and
invites the public to walk across the surface to generate sound.
As they become damaged the tiles create different sounds. Fujimoto
intends the viewer to explore the simple act of concentration experiencing
sounds we may have imagined but have never heard.
