With unaffordable rent prices in St Ives, artists often find it difficult to exhibit their work and for seven artists who lived in the area this was the exact problem they were experiencing.

That is until one gets talking to the other who gets talking to another and before you know it the group had stumbled upon the marvellous idea of setting up a co-operative.

Inside Art Space
Ok, so once you rent a gallery you have to split the space seven ways, but the costs are a 7th of the price and your work gets seen. Genious.

Art Space launched its own small gallery back in April 2000 in Court Arcade, Wharf Road, St Ives.

The commitment from the group and the success of the gallery was such that 3 years on the group were able to expand and move into
their current premises on The Wharf overlooking the harbour.

Three of the founder member's; Jane Beecroft, Greta Brett and Helen Atkins continue with their involvement in the new Art Space Gallery and have since been joined by artists; Sadie Wyatt, Lesley Ninnes, Chris Allen and Annie Metcalfe.

Work exhibited inside the gallery
Work hangs from all walls of Art Space.
Each of the seven meet regularly meet to discuss business and each take their turn to run the gallery one day a week.

The group also re-hang the paintings each month, so that each artist gets an opportunity to show their work on all walls as well as giving exhibits a fresh feel.

The co-operative has enabled each of the artists to spread their wings further afield, exhibiting in other galleries and exhibitions as well as selling to collectors as far afield as Cyprus, Lichenstein, Sweden and America.

The work shown by all the artists is predominantly painting, ranging from figurative to the abstract, although there is work on display in other disciplines.
