  • To make it interesting - ask them before the session if there is one thing they'd really like to do - like send their first email to a friend or family member they haven't seen for a while.
  • Start with the basics - don't assume they've used a computer before. You may need to start at the very beginning - show them how to switch it on, how to hold a mouse, how to click.
  • If they find it difficult to see some of the characters on the keyboard, put stickers on the ones they need to use a lot - like the return key.
  • Be patient - remember that it can be difficult and frustrating when learning new skills - so take it slow and be prepared to repeat things.
  • Listen carefully to what they are saying and try not to get frustrated when they don't understand.
  • Explain everything very simply, computer jargon can be very confusing.
  • Take one step at a time, keep sessions short so they don't feel overloaded with information.
  • Find out what their hobbies and interests are so you can help them find the information they're really interested in - like getting bargains online, or finding their favourite music.
  • What about thinking of something that will make their life more easy? Booking a train ticket, sending an email to a friend who lives a long way away - pick one task to make the session more manageable. Hopefully they'll feel they've really achieved something.
