Question Time, British National Party, BBC One, 22 October 2009

Publication date: 22 October 2009

Complaint

We received complaints from people who are unhappy that British National Party leader Nick Griffin has been invited to appear on Question Time.

The BBC's Response

The BBC is obliged to treat all political parties registered with the Electoral Commission and operating within the law with due impartiality. There is evidence of electoral support after the British National Party won two seats in the European Elections so like any party in this position the BNP may appear on programmes like Question Time.

The BBC's Chief Political Advisor Ric Bailey has written an Editor's Blog that provides a more detailed analysis of this issue. This can be viewed via the Related Links section on the right hand side of this page.

Update 22 October 2009: BBC Director-General Mark Thompson has published a Blog setting out his thoughts on the invitation to British National Party leader Nick Griffin to appear on Question Time this evening. This can be viewed via the Related Links section on the right hand side of this page.
