Ask Carla Bonner and Janet Andrewartha transcript
This event took place on Monday 14th October 2002
Carla and Janet Carla Bonner & Janet Andrewartha
Carla and Janet, better known as Steph and Lyn Scully in the hit Aussie soap Neighbours, filled us in on Ramsey Street life.

This chat took place on Monday 14th October 2002, when Carla Bonner (Steph Scully) and Janet Andrewartha (Lyn Scully) were visiting the UK to attend the National Television Awards.

Question from Helen: Janet - were you two chosen specifically to come over to the awards and have you had much time to see the sites since you arrived in the UK?
Janet Andrewartha: We believe that the BBC requested that we attend, although we're not sure really! We just feel lucky that we're the ones who are here this year. We haven't seen a lot of the sights yet as we've been doing lots of interviews. We have had a few cabbies help us out with where we are.

Question from Karl: You're going to the National Television Awards tomorrow and I think Neighbours has a good chance of winning. Do you have an acceptance speech ready?
Carla Bonner: Apparently we have a good chance, and that would be wonderful. I have no speech prepared, my Mum has done all that! It'll be very exciting.

Question from Craig: Do you get recognised by the public in the UK and how's the response been so far?
Janet Andrewartha: At the airport we were waiting for our driver and people were so nice. They came over with scraps of paper asking for our autographs. They're very polite and respectful.

Question from Graham: Carla, is it true this is your first visit to the UK, what do you make of it so far, is it what you expected?
Carla Bonner: Yes, weather wise it is! I'm blown away just by the pubs! How old they are really, they're gorgeous. There's history on every corner and it's wonderful.

Question from Get: Do you ladies have any plans for the future? Like after Neighbours? Or are you happy at the moment with what you're doing?
Janet Andrewartha: We're contracted for a specific period and we're happy to stay for that but who knows after that.

Question from Mark: Janet, do you miss your days playing Reb Kean in Prisoner, and what is it like to work with Maggie Millar again after so long?
Janet Andrewartha: Very odd isn't it. Occasionally in the make-up chair Maggie (who plays Vicar Rosie) will use the voice that she used as Marie Winter in Prisoner! It's terrific to work with her again. There's a few others that were in Prisoner too, but not in my time. Reb was a great character, she was so much more larger than life. I got to do some outrageous things!

Question from Becky to Carla: If you didn't play Steph who would you like to play?
Carla Bonner: Darcy... Dr Evil! I think it would be interesting!

Question from jameslamont: How did you get the roles of Steph and Lyn?
Carla Bonner: The Scullys had been cast and had worked together for three weeks. The original Steph couldn't see her contract through so I got an instant audition and did a cold read. It all happened in three days for me. I went in, learnt 19 scenes for the next day, and had to develop the character very quickly.
Janet Andrewartha: A most unusual situation but as a family we work so much better with Carla with us.

Question from Rosie: Does Connor ever come back and if so, will Michelle and Connor stay together for a long time?
Janet & Carla: [Together] Aaaahhhhh!
Janet Andrewartha: He does, he's still with us. How long is a piece of string though? Who can say how long they'll stay together!

Question from Kazziee: Regarding the recent Steph/Flick/Mark storyline, would you forgive Flick if you were Steph?
Carla Bonner: No, I'd do exactly the same thing but I don't think I'd hold back with the punches either! I think I'd lose it! Because we have 5 year old children watching Neighbours, we couldn't distress them so I had to pull back on what I could do - I wanted to hit him harder - but it was great!

Question from mrsjoelsamuels: Will you be catching up with ex-Neighbours stars now based in the UK during your trip? E.g.: Daniel MacPherson (Joel) and Holly Valance (Flick)?
Janet Andrewartha: Yes. I've met with Holly already, but she's on her way back to Australia right now. Daniel, we'll go to the awards with tomorrow, and Jonathan Dutton as well. A bit of a reunion!

Question from buzby23: Do you wish that Steph could find true love and to stop getting involved with bad boys?
Carla Bonner: I think for Steph to find true love would be pretty boring. I actually like it that she's unlucky in love. I know the viewers want her to be happy though. I'd rather her do other things. You have enough couples on Ramsey Street, I don't think Steph needs to be paired off yet!
Janet Andrewartha: But I want grandchildren!! [laughs]

Question from nadim: Do you watch any or have your seen any British soaps and what do you think of them?
Janet Andrewartha: I don't think I do. We don't get them in Australia and I've only ever spent a few weeks at a time here so I don't watch TV then.
Carla Bonner: Years ago, EastEnders used to be shown, and I loved that, but it's not on any more.
