Ask John Altman transcript
This event took place Saturday 4th August 2001
John Altman
John Altman, joined L&K to chat online to his fans about life on the square and more.

Question from Denise: How did you become so famous because I really want to become an actress. I do go to a drama class, but how did you start?

John Altman: Acting at school, amateur dramatics and then I began at the very bottom doing stage management and worked my way up!

Question from Saunder: How old were you when you first started acting?

John Altman: I was 15 and I played Professor Higgins in Pygmalion, also known as My Fair Lady.

Question from Daniel: How did you get involved in Eastenders?

John Altman: Well, I was sent by my agent to audition, read the script and dressed accordingly, with earring in of course!

Question from Karl: Are you anything like your character?

John Altman: Only when I confront traffic wardens!

Question from Maeve:Do you enjoy playing bad boy Nick Cotton or would you prefer a calmer and gentler character like Barry?

John Altman: Barry? Who's Barry? I would like to play something calmer or gentler, perhaps in another series or a film.

Question from Sophie Stephens: John, what was your favourite scene you played as Nick Cotton?

John Altman: Favourite scene? The last one I did with Dot, when I was leaving. Oh, and the one over the coffin when Ashley died.

Question from Willbow: How did you feel when you were chosen to play the part of nasty Nick?

John Altman: I was very glad of the work but later I was a bit worried as he was such an evil person but it hasn't been as bad as I feared.

Question from Shannon Adams: Have you ever had to do a scene that you didn't want to do?

John Altman: No. If there's a problem, we can always change it.

Question from Craig: Out of all the different areas of your career, soaps, major movies pantomimes etc which do/did you enjoy the most?

John Altman: I enjoy being on a film set the most. I've done quite a few. One about the Beatles and a load of others.

Question from Olic007 SW: Which part of the Star Wars film were you a rebel pilot?

John Altman: During the final battle. It's hardly worth watching.

Question from Katie: If you could be another character in Eastenders who would it be and why?

John Altman: I've never wanted to be another character on Eastenders.

Question from Ed: Who was the best person to work with out of the cast of Eastenders?

John Altman: Ooh. Difficult one. But I could name June Brown and Mark Carty. Dot and Mark.

Question from Fiona: What part do you play in Chicago?

John Altman: Billy Flynn. He's a lawyer.
