Ask Liz Barker transcript
This event took place Friday 23rd June 2000
Liz Barker
Liz Barker joined Blue Peter as the 29th presenter of the show. She talked to us straight after her initiation.

Question from John Somas: Did you enjoy your first show?

Liz Barker: I can't stop grinning ! -- I really enjoyed it, everyone was so lovely -- it was really good fun.

Question from Nicholas Wilson: Why did you want to be a Blue Peter presenter?

Liz Barker: I think it's the best job in the world, to be honest -- it's not proper work. You get to do the most amazing things and you never know from one day to the next what's going to happen. It's so exciting.

Question from Ngus: Liz, How did you get involved in television?

Liz Barker: When I left university, I was lucky enough to get work experience with a small company and I worked really hard doing all sorts of things and eventually, on a programme on BBC Choice, I became a sports presenter by accident!

Question from Cara Parker: Were you very nervous before the show?

Liz Barker: Yes -- and I looked very nervous to everyone else -- I kept having to take deep breaths and my stomach started to go a bit funny -- getting butterflies is the technical term.

Question from Gretel Baron: What is your favourite band?

Liz Barker: I've got favourite songs more than favourite bands, but I do love dance music and I like Travis, All Saints -- that sort of thing -- Paul Weller -- and Robbie Williams! I like dancing to dance music.

Question from Carla Bradley: Hi, what are your hobbies?

Liz Barker: I like gardening, cooking (I sound like my mother!); I love cycling and tennis and yoga -- and being with friends as well, really. Lots of things. I like to go round the country and see places. I've recently really enjoyed doing up my flat -- I like interior design and things like that.

Question from Jenny Patterson: Who was your favourite Blue Peter presenter when you were a child?

Liz Barker: There've been lots -- I liked Simon Groom, Yvette Fielding... I like Katie as well -- she's my favourite!

Question from Marym Galbraith: What are your favourite pets?

Liz Barker: Cats. But I like all animals. I love whales and sea things.

Question from John Pratt: Hello Liz, are you scared of anything, like heights, spiders etc?

Liz Barker: I don't really like heights, although it doesn't stop me going on fairground rides or bungie jumping -- but my stomach goes a bit funny if I look down.

Question from Emma Batchelor: How did you get chosen as a presenter, did you need special training?

Liz Barker: I think I was very, very lucky to get chosen -- I don't know how it happened. I think you have to enjoy what you do and be yourself. I haven't had any training. You have to be very, very lucky.

Question from Siew-Lee Khaw: What are you looking forward to most on Blue Peter?

Liz Barker: I'm looking forward to the surprises. I don't what I'll be doing but I'll try anything once. I'd love to be an action girl, drive a fast car, jump around and stuff.
