Ask EastEnders transcript
This event took place Monday 12th November, 2001
EastEnders
EastEnders actress Hannah Waterman aka Laura Beale came into the Live Chat studio to answer your questions about Ian, fish 'n' chips and much more ...

Question from William West: Are you like Laura in real life?

Hannah Waterman: I think there are elements of Laura that are similar to character traits of my own but I also think I'm very different. I'm much more confident than Laura. I hope I've got better taste in clothes.

Question from Sara, Ireland: Did you always want to be an actress and did your Dad influence your decision to go into acting?

Hannah Waterman: Both my parents are actors. My Mum played Laura's mum in the show. They were both keen for me to have a proper education first and then make a decision on whether I wanted to pursue the acting, which was great.

Question from Julie Henn: Who is your closest friend from the cast in real life and why?

Hannah Waterman: Aside from my other half, Ricky Groves, I would say Natalie Cassidy who has a very wise head on young shoulders - top bird!

Question from Nancy Barham: Is it fun to work along side Ian's character? He is a bit of a baddie on the show.

Hannah Waterman: Poor Laura, she does have a tough time with Ian. It's lovely working with Adam Woodyatt though, he's great fun. I think Ian's with Laura for the right reasons, I think he loves her. She's not a trophy bride and they have a good relationship, if only he'd listen a bit more.

Question from Amanda Dart: What was it like to first see yourself on television with the stars?

Hannah Waterman: I'd worked on other TV shows before so it wasn't the first time I'd seen myself on TV. It's not good to see what you look like in some of Laura's wardrobe though. I watch myself on TV to progress and get better in my job.

Question from Tom Dangerfield: What happens to Laura now? Do you wish she gets back with Ian?

Hannah Waterman: I think Ian has got to accept that Laura isn't like Cindy. When he's calmed down he'll be prepared to listen to her a bit more. Let's see what happens when he has a bit more information and they have time to talk.

Question from Daniel Strain: Mr Davis seemed like a nice character, but it seemed after all he was a nasty piece of work. Did you enjoy playing those scenes with him?

Hannah Waterman: It was great. Hugh who played Mr Davis is a very experienced actor, he was great. He created a very unpleasant character but he's totally different in real life.

Question from Andrew: How much easier was it having your Mum with you on set?

Hannah Waterman: In some ways it's more difficult because you feel a natural defensiveness towards your family. I didn't cope very well with people telling her off. It was all great fun though.

Question from Claire Butterworth: Did you have special training to work in the chip shop?

Hannah Waterman: Adam taught me how to wrap cod and chips which he's an expert at. I still haven't mastered the art of doing it quietly so the sound men don't get angry yet.

Question from Rowlf Foreman: Did the cast treat you well when you first arrived?

Hannah Waterman: They were fantastic. They were all really welcoming and Adam propped me up for the first six weeks when I was trembling with nerves. I couldn't wish for better people to work with, I was very lucky.

Question from Sarah Butcher: Hi. Do you find it difficult to do kissing scenes?

Hannah Waterman: Shut your eyes and think of England! They're really embarrassing and Adam loves winding me up about them.

Question from Caz: What would you like to change about Laura?

Hannah Waterman: I'd like to sort her wardrobe out! I also love it when she's feisty with Ian. I'd love her to get a bit more in control.

Question from Donna Palmer: Do you think you will be in EastEnders for years to come?

Hannah Waterman: I'd certainly like to stay there a lot longer yet. At the moment I'm still learning so much and EastEnders has given me a fantastic opportunity. I'm very happy there for the time being.

Question from Leah McKenzie: What ambitions do you have?

Hannah Waterman: I certainly would love to play the bitch, the trampy character. That would be fun!

Question from Caroline: Can you see Laura becoming an Albert Square super-bitch?

Hannah Waterman: No, she's too nice for that. I don't think so. It would be too much of a leap. She's got her own qualities though.

Question from Lesley Hannah: Who's your fave character in EastEnders?

Hannah Waterman: I know a popular choice is Dot Cotton, you can't fault her. I've had a couple of scenes with her recently and they're always enjoyable and it's a pleasure working with such a pleasant and talented woman.

Question from Rosalind James: Do think that Laura would ever be unfaithful to Ian?

Hannah Waterman: I think that her loyalties lie with Ian. It would have to be an extreme situation to push her into an affair or Ian doing something hurtful to her that she reacted to. You never know, people fall in love. You can never predict.

Question from Gary Jones: Do you find it easy to cry when the storyline demands?

Hannah Waterman: It's not as hard as people think. There is a make-up trick called a tear stick which brings tears on but if you can avoid that and do it for real, it's much more effective.
