Question from Steve: Do you enjoy working on Attachments? If so, why?
Amanda Ryan: I loved working on Attachments. The reasons why are, first of all everyone got on very well indeed so it was like going to see your friends. It was fun. Also the scripts are very good and the characterisation is very good and to have all those ingredients together is a very rare thing and a great opportunity. No job is ever ideal, but this was pretty good.
Question from Jackie Edge: What is it like playing a gay woman? Is it fun?
Amanda Ryan: Depends who I have to snog! I was comfortable playing the role, it was fine. I'm not gay and I was concerned that I portrayed Soph in a true way. I didn't want to be offensive to a gay community so I was concerned about getting it right. But then I thought, genuinely, as an actor, you're often required to play something that is different to your own experiences so I approached it the same as every character I play.
Question from Lee Cronin: Do you think that Attachments has left the Internet idea and become more of a soap?
Amanda Ryan: It was definitely a choice this time around that more of the stories
were centred around the characters rather than the internet so maybe it is a true
description of it. Personally, I find it more interesting that you can go a deeper level
into the characters, especially as you get further into the series. I don't miss the
internet information being there but maybe some people do.
Question from Dean Phillips: Is there anything about Sophie that reminds you of
yourself? If so, what?
Amanda Ryan: I get asked this a lot. I did an interview recently and they asked me this question. How it came back after I read it was "playing Soph is a licence to strop and let's just say I haven't always been an angel". I think I probably did say that actually! I haven't always behaved well. I can be quite spiky I think and Soph has that. She's not a soft person. I'm quite a strong woman. The other thing is her attitude towards work. Her writing is very important to her and it's important that she's honest and that's what I hope to achieve in my acting.
Question from Ben HB: How did you get the job?
Amanda Ryan: It was a long audition process. Firstly my agent got the audition for me. I was sent along to a first meeting where the producer talked to me about the project and as soon as he spoke about Soph I knew I wanted the part. Then I had to read all afternoon and spend time with other actors to improvise. After all of that, we were chosen. I think it was important because I wouldn't say we are all like our characters, but we've all got bits that link us to our characters. That's why it works so well dramatically. Everyone's character is unique.
Question from Peter Williams: Do you use the net in real life?
Amanda Ryan: I do. I don't think it's in a very inspired way. The last time I used the net was to download a ringtone from askjeeves and it's the Harry Potter theme.
Question from Nic Berry: Have any of you on the programme created any of the actual content on the real seethru.com?
Amanda Ryan: No is the answer to that. They employ a journalist to be Soph. The only stuff we might have contributed would be pictures or if there's an interview we do. It would be a full-time job and we're actors, not journalists.
Question from Mr Goat: Which series do you prefer and why?
Amanda Ryan: Series 2. The reason being Soph's character develops much more in this series. She gets to have a love interest. There's more of that to come and for me it's been a great opportunity. She gets great lines and great ways to be. With the introduction of the other gay character coming in, I got to explore a softer side to Soph. She becomes more emotionally available and more open. She's driven by something that she wants. For me that was great because it was another angle for me to explore.
