The BBC's Creative Network for Independents outside London
XM25 is part of a package of measures to sustain a strong and vibrant production sector outside London. The scheme aims to give the creative heads of fifteen independent production companies in-depth access to BBC commissioning in Factual and Entertainment. We want to strengthen relationships with our commissioners and enable the focused development of ideas in these areas.
What is XM25?
- Four sessions lasting a day and a half, from October to July
- Fifteen places available (one per company)
- The sessions will involve detailed presentations by and discussions with our network commissioning and channel teams to provide insights into what BBC Vision needs and how we work
- Sessions will go beyond our commissioning needs to present our business in the round, including input from scheduling, multiplatform, and marketing execs
How do the sessions work?
- Sessions will alternate between London and other production centres in the UK.
- Participants will arrive in the afternoon of day one for dinner and drinks with members of the commissioning teams. Following an overnight stay, day two will comprise a full day of presentations, discussions, and one-to-one meetings.
- Overnight accommodation will be booked and paid for by the BBC, along with travel costs up to a set amount.
- Sessions will be hosted by the BBC Independents Executive, Krishan Arora.
Requirements and selection criteria
- Companies should be UK-based network suppliers of Factual or Entertainment with their primary office base outside the M25.
- Companies new to the BBC will need to demonstrate a commitment to and capacity for producing for BBC network.
- Participating companies will be expected to build on the scheme by providing a regular flow of ideas to our commissioning teams through the normal routes.
- A lead creative from the company to attend the sessions must be named in the application.
- Existing BBC support of companies will be taken into consideration (eg Series Producer Scheme, or development funding), but will not exclude companies from XM25.
- A commitment is needed that the same person attends all four sessions (although of course we're aware that unforeseen circumstances may occasionally intervene). Exact dates will be fixed well in advance.
- This scheme isn't appropriate for companies primarily involved in new media or children's content, because of the BBC execs who will be involved.
The 15 companies will be selected to provide a balance
- between factual and entertainment genres
- between the different nations and regions of the UK
- between companies with the potential for growth and those that are already established
2009-10 Scheme - How to apply
The deadline for submitting applications for the 2009-2010 XM25 scheme has now passed and this year's successful applicants can be found at the top of this page. Submissions will be reviewed by Krishan Arora, Independents Executive, with members of the Knowledge and Entertainment Commissioning teams, and other BBC executives involved in out of London production.
As there may be considerable demand for the 15 places on XM25, we regret that the likely volume will mean that individual feedback can't be given to all unsuccessful applicants.
Other ways in which companies can connect with our commissioners include: network commissioning briefings, and the BBC-funded Series Producer Scheme run by TRC Media.
