What is enhanced programme page design?

The programme pages on bbc.co.uk have been redesigned to have a consistently recognisable layout and feel for all programmes and channels.

The pages will carry the default design of their originated broadcast channel. A few programmes will have their design customised for maximum visual impact. They will have a bespoke banner at the top of the page as well as custom page and text colours.

What do the banners look like?

Research has shown that the key to identify a programme is recognisable talent. The design strategy is to design banners that contain a key talent image on a recognisable background. This will be overlaid with the programme title. Logos will not be included.

Why is there no logo?

The new programmes pages have been designed to have a consistent look and feel irrespective of whether they carry bespoke programme branding or channel branding. The strategy is to visually represent the programme through a key image of recognisable on screen talent. The use of a logo is merely duplicating the typography of the programme title.

Additionally logos are not an identifier online, they're not required as sign posts as on TV. Users will have already arrived at the programme page via a search by name or clicking on a link containing the programme name.

Logos also change over time eg Top Of The Pops.

Can I add my logo elsewhere, if I can't have it in the banner?

Yes, it works well as the illustration for a supporting content item. However we strongly advise using it as the 'hero' image for the episode, which turns up on iPlayer etc, and should be used as an illustration of that episode.

What are the criteria for having my design enhanced?

Any programme that has a multiplatform commission. Additionally, Vision marketing priorities, where considerable production effort goes into online presence. These are a handful of programmes in each genre. For example, Frozen Planet and Planet Dinosaur

  • The decision on which programmes should get banners will be taken within each genre, to reflect:
  • the programmes where the genre has decided to put particular investment into online content production
  • the degree to which that programme will attract an online audience, and
  • Vision marketing priorities.

Further criteria might include:

  • fresh content published throughout the first TX run
  • a social media offer

Image assets will be provided by the TV team.

I satisfy the criteria, what now?

Contact your superuser who will help you to select your key image. This may involve talking to your marketing manager or pictures manager for help.

Your superuser then will manage the rest of the branding process.

Selecting the key image for your banner

A guide to selecting your banner image can be downloaded in the document "Image Sourcing". These images need to be complied by the programmes Executive Producer.

Who's going to do the design work?

This is evolving but at the moment that central programmes team will. However if you’d like your graphics house to do it please get in touch.

Who needs to sign off the pages?

There are two mandatory sign offs. Firstly, by the production, the Exec Producer (+ Commissioning Exec for Indies). Secondly, by TV & iPlayer programmes team, the Creative Director for On Demand at Future Media

Additionally it would be prudent for productions to seek Channel, Marketing, Comms and Pictures approval.

What if I need to change my design?

If your key presenters or characters change and the banner needs a refresh please contact your superuser.

Can I view my enhanced programme pages on a mobile?

Yes, enhancements can be viewed on mobile browsers. The banner is not included due to space constraints. The first version of the new mobile designs has been released and more are scheduled to follow e.g. Planet Dinosaur

Can my BBC Three programme pages be enhanced?

The strategy for BBC Three programmes is that they carry the channel branding. There are a small number of exceptions. If you think that your programme should carry bespoke branding please seek approval from the controller or editorial exec.

Can the programme title be in upper case?

The programme title that appears at the top of the page comes from the billings information submitted via P4A. If you want to change this then please re-submit your billings but please note that if you change the case then you will be changing the actual name of the programme that appears on Electronic Programme Guides on TV, television listings in newspapers and on listings websites that we syndicate this information to.

Can the programme title be in a different font?

No, the font is set for consistency across all BBC programme pages and can’t be changed for a single programme.
