7. Marketing & Promotion
1. Tape and production
- Resource: A designer and / or ViZ operator is needed for on-screen graphics (see design). Usual filming paperwork applies (see paperwork).
- Delivery Standards: If the sing along service is live, this is produced from a gallery. If pre-recorded the red button version needs to be delivered to usual linear TX standards on SD digibeta NOT HD.
- Programme Title: should include linear programme and red button episode number e.g: Greatest Love Songs: Red Button sing along episode x
- Tech review: If pre-recorded the tape must pass BBC tech review before it can be broadcast.
- Tape delivery: If pre-recorded the delivery information and date needs to be communicated to the RedBee Interactive Playout 9. The master tape needs to be delivered to Playout 9 tape intake area, TX – 5 days.
2. Live services
- Gallery: Book a gallery with BBC Resources. This requires Freeview and Satellite set top boxes with monitors to view output; space for ViZ/graphics operator; PC or network point; digi machine to RX rehearsals and mixing desk. Check linear schedule for rehearsal times and book gallery accordingly. Let SRM know where source feeds are coming from. If internal, find out which gallery the linear programme is coming from and decide whether you need just a dirty feed or a clean feed as well, you may need to cover the network graphics if you use a dirty feed.
- Lines: If being produced outside of TVC lines will need to be booked earlier than BBC One requirements to accommodate rehearsals. Red Bee Interactive Play Out 9 will need a CBIS number.
- Rehearsals: Rehearse alongside the linear team to become familiar with the songs and timings, as well as any last minute changes to the running order. Record the rehearsal in order to check lyrics and re-rehearse
- Note:**Some performers will change the odd word in the songs they sing; in spite of this continue to use the lyrics as they are given by production; this is for copyright purposes**
- Check if any of the lyric straps conflict with the network graphics, you might need to vision mix between clean and dirty feeds. Rehearse to double check when these GFX appear and identify mixing points.
3. Paperwork
i) Production paperwork:
- TX form: If pre-recorded, printed off and delivered with tape as well as an electronic version e-mailed to the PD Red Button TX Forms.
- Red Button Billings Form: Three weeks prior to TX PD Button Billings Forms
- Source copies of the running order, rehearsal and TX schedules from the linear team. The running order should also show when on screen GFX will appear in the linear programme; this will alert you to any possible conflict with interactive GFX.
- Lyrics: Source copies of the final lyrics from the linear team. Once obtained pass them on to the VizRT/Graphics operator for inclusion on-screen (see design).
ii) Red Button paperwork: this will be requested by the FM Central Editorial Team 3 weeks prior to TX
- Call centre document:
- Escalation document: A document with emergency contact details during TX
- Walkthrough recording request: If required a recording of the outing can be arranged for you.
4. Bandwidth Requirements
- How much & when: Do you need availability directly after a linear TX? For how long? Is it a one off / daily / weekly?
- Request: Contact the Interactive TV scheduler as soon as possible to arrange bandwidth needed, and triggers (see design below).
5. Design
i) Resource & sign off
- ViZ design & resource: Sing-along services use a system called ViZRT for the lyrics and interactive graphics. A ViZ operator is needed to input this, they can also be used for this part of the design process.
- BBC Red Button UX&D: If all being designed by red button UX&D all details and assets need to be sent to the FM Central Editorial Team 3 weeks before TX.
- BBC other & external: If being designed by different BBC departments or externally then contact the FM Central Editorial Team team for advice, there are design guidelines on the Editorial and Online guidelines page.
- Sign off: Lyrics strap and application graphics to be signed off by Exec or Commissioner & linear production. Delivered to ViZ/graphics company once signed off.
ii) Design elements
- Embedded in video: The lyric graphics and any other interactive elements need to be embedded in the video, assets and lyrics need to be sent to the ViZ/graphics operator.
For FM Central Editorial Platforms Team:
- Trigger: This is the graphic that appears in the top right of the screen to prompt the viewer to press red. You can choose the colour, style and wording to match the brand, there are limitations on text length and colour palettes. We need a separate trigger for Freeview and Sky, plus a ‘Please wait trigger’.
- Bridge link graphic & text: This is the text, plus a small circular image that appears on the menu (bridge) when a viewer presses red, and links to your content. You decide what you want this to be, there are colour palette limitations. We need a longer and shorter version of this for different links e.g. ‘Doctor Who Confidential / Doctor Who’.
- Service slides: These appear before & after the video to inform the viewer when the service will begin and end, plus if there are problems with the service, if needed a warning slide should be created for strong language / violence. We therefore need at least 3x service slides with bespoke branding and copy.
- Interstitials: These are similar to slides and advertise your service on Sky and appear when waiting for another service to load. See example ppt.
- Quarter screen design: This is the design that appears when a viewer presses the blue menu button to access text pages including help. There are slightly different designs needed for Sky, Freeview and Virgin Media (see example ppt) as they have different limitations. *Separate assets need to be saved out and inputted with colour definitions provided into a BBC system called MOSS. This is usually done by BBC red button.
6. Text needed – from production team
- Design text: The producer needs to provide text to the designers for sub menu, interstitial slide, trigger, bridge graphic, service slides (above)
- Additional: The producer should also provide text for the Welcome Banner (appears when a viewer enters a service), other text pages if needed plus the website url - emailed to the FM Central Editorial Team
- Producers can input this information themselves if they have access and are trained to use to the BBC system MOSS.
7. Marketing & Promotion
On screen promotion:
- Triggers: Liaise with Interactive TV scheduler to request a trigger at the end of the programme. They will agree this with the relevant channel.
- Call To Action: Voiceover CTAs should be agreed with the linear production and included in the parent programme or arranged with MC&A to be done by continuity. Wording should be agreed with MC&A Media Planning. Follow guidelines regarding reference to platforms.
Pre-TX promotion:
