Vision Red Button Commissioning and Delivery Information

This is a brief guide about the process for making a red button programme for BBC Vision. Please contact either the Red Button Development Exec or Producer with any enquiries.

1. Pre-Green Light actions for Production Teams

  • Commissioning: All Vision red button programmes need to be agreed with Red Button Development Exec or Producer.
  • Bandwidth: Contact the Interactive TV scheduler to find out if there is bandwidth available around the time of your programme to transmit the red button content.
  • Promotion: Agree marketing and promotion plan with the Red Button Development Exec or Producer .
  • Paperwork: All requests for red button programmes should submit a red button Editorial Specification with budget.  The Slate Manager for TV & iPlayer will send this document out once the idea has been discussed.

2. Commissioned Projects Requirements

  • Green light: The commissioning team will provide UIDS for each red button programme along with delivery requirements and deadlines as well as funding information.
  • Project Kick Off: FM Central Editorial Platforms will outline the application type, design and copy requirements and deadlines
  • Red Bee Delivery Information: The Production team must inform Red Bee Interactive Play Out 9 (PO9) of the nature of the red button programme material including the following:

1. If the programme is live or pre-recorded..

2. CBIS and OB details for live or spool numbers and delivery date for pre-recorded material

3. A media schedule is required for a red button series which lists episodes, UIDS, spool numbers, location of tape and whether it’s passed tech review.

4. Distribute to PD Red Button TX Forms which includesw Red Bee Interactive Play Out 9 (PO9), FM & the red button producer.

  • Design: The production team need to provide design assets including any branding, logo, a copy of the programme font, colour palette and publicity images to give to the FM&T UXD designers at least 2 weeks prior to the available to schedule date.

Based on the channel and the brand assets supplied, the designer will choose the colour scheme for the application. This includes a trigger, a bridge graphic, 3 x service slides and an interstitial slide (more for quizzes & multi-screens). A PowerPoint walkthrough of the designs will need to be signed off by the linear production team Exec. You can find an example PowerPoint in the downloads section of this page (top right).  

  • TX Master & Tech Review: The TX master must be produced to the latest network TV standards but on SD digibeta NOT HD and must pass a BBC tech review. A clone and viewing copies should be made. * For quizzes a clone needs to be delivered to the FM Central Editorial Platforms Team ASAP.

  • Paperwork delivery:  

1. Red Button Billings Form: Three weeks prior to TX PD Red Button Billings Forms.

2. TX Form: required pre TX and distributed to PD Red Button TX Forms 

3. Compliance form: saved on TV Compliance Manager 

4. Once the compliance form is signed off and submitted please let the FM Central Editorial Platforms team and Red Button Producer know

5. PasC & Music Reporting within two weeks of TX: saved on P4A or delivered to the programme delivery co-ordinator in the Indie Delivery Unit

  9. Call to Action: If you are recording a CTA for the red button service within the network programme, the CTA must be prior to the credits and another version of the programme, without the CTA, must be delivered in case of repeats that aren’t supported by the red button.
  • Indie Delivery Checklist
  1. Design assets & copy for red button application design. Please deal with your programme delivery co-ordinator in the Indie Delivery Unit for delivery of red button programme material:-
  2. TX Master
  3. Digital file or DVD viewing copy
  4. Tech review
  5. Red Button Billings form
  6. TX form
  7. Compliance Form
  8. PasC & Music Reporting
  9. Call to Action: If you are recording a CTA within the network programme, the CTA must be prior to the credits and another version of the programme, without the CTA, must be delivered in case of repeats or changes to TX schedules that aren’t supported by the red button.
  • Trigger: Liaise with the Interactive TV scheduler who will request a trigger for the red button programme from the channel.
  • Tape Delivery: The TX master must be delivered to Interactive Play Out 9 (PO9) after it has passed tech review, e-mail Red Bee Media MM Librarians-RBM & I&A Current Operations, request Current Ops to put the tape on the Red Bee shelf at TVC and ask the Red Bee librarians to send a runner to collect it. Let PO9 know when to expect the tape.
  • FM Paperwork: A Call Centre Document and Escalation Document with contacts for production, including any gallery and OB numbers are required by the FM Central Editorial Platforms team by FM approximately three weeks prior to TX.
  • Walkthrough: Complete a Walkthrough Request form if required and send to the FM Central Editorial Platforms Team. A digital copy of the service will be available from the team post TX.

3. Final Upload and testing for Central Editorial Platforms Team 

  • Uploading to live: After all deliverables have been sent through and designs signed off - the FM Central Editorial Platforms Team upload all assets to live systems (MOSS / Clarity / JAQ CMS)
  • Pre-live testing (BBC):  the FM Central Editorial Platforms Team test all designs and functionality is working properly before TX, on all platforms.
    *This requires more time for Quizzes, therefore a tape needs to be delivered two weeks prior to TX.
  • RedBee testing: As a final sign off, RedBee Service Delivery also test the services technically on all platforms, and ensure they are ready for live.  RedBee Playout Directors also check they have everything in place (Tape / Live feed / Service slides etc).

4. Post TX Information:

  • Viewing Figures: Red Button audience figures are published on Gateway once a week either Tuesday pm or Wednesday am. Indies can request these from the Red Button Producer.
  • Technical Reports: RedBee monitor all output and put together reports of any technical problems. The FM Central Editorial Platforms team will inform you of any issues reported.
