1.Production & Tape delivery

Production:

  • Resource: An additional tape of the programme may need to be made for red button, to be played alongside the linear show. A designer should be involved during editing as the red button version needs to have design elements for the colour buttons and countdown timer.
  • Quiz structure: You need to be aware of the structure and time requirements for the quiz. A plan needs to be made in pre-production for: Amount & length of questions, and importantly amount of answers (max 4 for colour buttons). Guidelines can be found here on the Join Anytime Quiz delivery page. Time Syncing: Times for play along quizzes are done in real time with a BBC system called ‘Question Controller’. A producer needs to be available during TX to press the buttons when needed.

Tape:

  • Aspect ratio: The tape needs to be delivered in 16:9
  • Standards: This needs to be delivered to usual linear TX standards on SD digibeta NOT HD.
  • Programme Title: should include linear programme and red button episode number e.g: The National Lottery In It To Win It: Red Button Episode x
  • Tech review: The tape must pass BBC tech review before it can be broadcast
  • Compliance: if the context of the content has not changed an additional compliance form is not required
  • A DVD Walkthrough should be recorded in the gallery
  • Play out:
  • Gallery: The tape is played out live from a gallery which needs to be booked in advance, This will require a tape deck to play the master tape out, a sound engineer, engineer, mixing desk, a Sky and a Freeview set top box and monitors to view Sky, Freeview and Network output and PC or network point.
  • A producer will need to follow instructions from FM&T Red Button service delivery team to run the quiz and liaise with Interactive Play out 9 via talkback on the day of production.
  • If it’s a Lottery programme this will also require talkback to the live lottery draw production.

2. Paperwork

i) Production paperwork:

If the context of the content has not changed from the parent programme additional paperwork is not required.

ii) Red Button paperwork:

  • Application text: A doc with text for: intro, thank you & end, scoring, plus a list of questions and answers - send to the Service Delivery Team.
  • TX info & questions: A list of question & answers plus TX dates and info needs to be supplied to the service delivery team before TX.
  • Call centre documents: Need to send call centre documents for Sky (DSAT) and Freeview (DTT) to the Service Delivery Team a few days before TX.
  • Escalation document: A document with emergency contact details during TX to be delivered to the Service Delivery Team, FM&T Red Button service delivery before TX

3. Bandwidth requirements

  • How much & when: For PAQs you need availability during linear TX. For how long? Is it a one off / daily / weekly?
  • Request: Contact the Interactive TV scheduler as soon as possible to arrange bandwidth needed, and triggers (see design below).

4. Design

i) Resource & sign off

  • Design & editing: For PAQS the designer needs to be involved in the editing process, as the design elements are also embedded in the video.
  • BBC Red Button UX&D: If being designed by red button all details and assets (colours, font, images, logos) need to be sent to the Service Delivery Team 3 weeks before TX.
  • BBC other & external: If being designed by different BBC departments or externally then contact the Service Delivery Team for advice, there are design guidelines that can be found on the Editorial & Online guidelines page.
  • Final upload: Due to the BBC software needed, the final upload and elements of design may need to be done by BBC Red Button UX&D.

ii) Quiz design:

  • Embedded in video: Graphics for colour buttons (indicate which to press for each answer), countdown timer.
  • Interactive elements: Coloured answer graphics (that show when button is pressed), we need separate graphics for Freeview, Sky and Virgin.

iii) Additional:

  • Trigger: This is the graphic that appears in the top right of the screen to prompt the viewer to press red. You can choose the colour, style and wording to match the brand, there are limitations on text length and colour palettes. We need a separate trigger for Freeview and Sky, plus a ‘Please wait trigger’.
  • Bridge link graphic & text: This is the text, plus a small circular image that appears on the menu (bridge) when a viewer presses red, and links to your content. You decide what you want this to be, there are colour palette limitations. We need a longer and shorter version of this for different links e.g. ‘Doctor Who Confidential / Doctor Who’.
  • Interstitials: These are branded to advertise your service on Sky and appear when waiting for another service to load.

5. Marketing & Promotion

On screen promotion:

  • Triggers: Liaise with Interactive TV scheduler to request a trigger at the end of the programme. They will agree this with the relevant channel.
  • Call To Action: Voiceover CTAs (i.e. Press red to play along with the National Lottery In It To Win It ) need to be arranged with the parent production team to either be included in the linear programme or to be done live on the night by continuity or by the National Lottery announcer

Pre-TX promotion:

6. Press Office & bbc.co.uk:

Send a paragraph of text about the red button service plus an image to The Service Delivery Team, for inclusion in the Red Button Blog, bbc.co.uk pages and Press Office website – 3 weeks before TX.
