1. Production & Tape delivery

Filming:

  • Resource: JAQs (Join Anytime Quizzes) usually require filming extra scenes and additional editing, therefore talent (agree fee via NRG talent rights), crew, location, design and editing all need to be arranged in addition to the linear show. Usual filming paperwork applies (see paperwork below)
  • Quiz structure: You need to be aware of the structure and time requirements for the quiz. A plan needs to be made in pre-production for: Amount & length of questions, intro, answer & outro times, plus transitions. Guidelines can be found on the 'Playalong Quiz Delivery' page.
  • Script & clips: A script needs written and signed of by the exec producer, any clips used from linear shows and music need to be cleared.

Tape:

  • Aspect ratio: The tape needs to be delivered in 4:3.
  • Standards: This needs to be delivered to usual linear TX standards on SD digibeta NOT HD.
  • Programme Title: should include linear programme and red button episode number e.g: Bang Goes the Theory Quiz: Red Button Episode x
  • Tech review: The tape must pass BBC tech review before it can be broadcast
  • Compliance: A DVD viewing copy must be made for the Commissioner to sign off compliance (see paperwork below)
  • Tape delivery: The delivery information and date needs to be communicated to the Red Bee Interactive Play Out 9. The master tape needs to be delivered to Playout 9 tape intake area, TX 5 days. A tape also needs to be delivered to FM Central Editorial Platforms Team 2 weeks prior to TX to test the timings of the quiz.

2. Paperwork

 i) Production paperwork:

  • Filming paperwork: Risk assessment, Call sheet etc
  • Red Bee Billings Form: Three weeks prior to TX PD Button Billings Forms
  • TX form: Printed off and delivered with tape as well as an electronic version e-mailed to PD Red Button TX Forms
  • Compliance form: All red button content follows TV compliance procedures. Indies need to forward the form to the BBC Multiplatform contact. This also needs to be emailed to the  FM Central Editorial Platforms Team.
  • PasC and music reporting paperwork supplied via P4A or to  the Indie Delivery Unit. More info (link to PasC guidelines TBC)

ii) Red Button paperwork: this will be requested by the FM Central Editorial Platforms Team 3 weeks prior to TX

  • Application text: A document with text for: Welcome screen, help text, scoring bands (max 4), plus a list of questions and answers.
  • Call centre documents:
  • Escalation document: A document with emergency contact details during TX.

3. Bandwidth requirements

  • How much & when: Do you need availability directly after linear TX? For how long? Is it a one off / daily / weekly?
  • Request: Contact the Interactive TV scheduler as soon as possible to arrange bandwidth needed, and triggers (see design below). Note – time for testing needs to be factored into this.

4. Design

i) Resource & sign off

  • Design & editing: For JAQS the designer needs to be involved in the editing process, as the design elements are also embedded in the video.
  • BBC Red Button UX&D: If being designed by BBC red button all details and assets (colours, font, images, logos) need to be sent to the FM Central Editorial Platforms Team 3 weeks before TX.
  • BBC other & external: If being designed by different BBC departments or externally then contact the FM Central Editorial Platforms Team for advice, there are design guidelines that can be found on the Editorial & Online guidelines page.
  • Final upload: Due to the BBC software needed services, the final upload and elements of design may need to be done by BBC Red Button UX&D.

ii) Quiz design:

  • Embedded in video: Transition between questions (needs to be static), answer screen (where choose your answer), count down clock, question number space (usually top left), answer graphic space.
  • Interactive elements: Coloured answer graphics (red, green, yellow, blue), right & wrong graphics, background graphics, colours for text and background of text elements, co-ords for all elements. We also need separate graphics for each platform – Freeview and Sky.

iii) Additional:

  • Trigger: This is the graphic that appears in the top right of the screen to prompt the viewer to press red. You can choose the colour, style and wording to match the brand, there are limitations on text length and colour palettes. We need a separate trigger for Freeview and Sky, plus a ‘Please wait trigger’.
  • Bridge link graphic & text: This is the text, plus a small circular image that appears on the menu (bridge) when a viewer presses red, and links to your content. You decide what you want this to be, there are colour palette limitations. We need a longer and shorter version of this for different links e.g. ‘Doctor Who Confidential / Doctor Who’.
  • Interstitials: These are branded to advertise your service on Sky and appear when waiting for another service to load.

5. Marketing & Promotion

 On screen promotion:

  • Triggers: Liaise with Interactive TV scheduler to request a trigger at the end of the programme. They will agree this with the relevant channel.
  • Call To Action: Voiceover CTAs (i.e. Press red now to get more Buzzcocks..) need to be arranged with the channel via MC&A Media Planning. Let Marketing know what times and on what platforms the red button content is available. Follow the Future Media standards and guidelines regarding reference to platforms.
  • Call to Action within the programme: It’s essential that if you’re recording a call to action for the red button programme within the network programme you must also deliver a version of the network programme without the call to action. If there’s a schedule change or repeat there might not always be bandwidth available to broadcast the red button programme. Network play out must be informed which is the correct version to broadcast.
  • End Credit Promo (ECP): Also needs to be arranged via MC&A Media Planning. It will need to be delivered in the agreed BBC format. The duration and wording should be agreed with MC&A Media Planning. If this is material that hasn’t been through BBC Technical Review it will need to do so and be complied, then delivered to the relevant Traffic contact at Red Bee.
