BBC THREE

Our Priorities

BBC Three is a mixed genre channel for young audiences.

We have three key priorities:

The channel needs to be disciplined about focusing on the young - its centre of gravity will be 16-34 year-olds: people who are young in spirit and mindset.

BBC Three needs to continue to innovate with stand-out entertainment, breakthrough comedy and intelligent factual formats. Our content needs to have potential to innovate across platforms.

BBC Three should provide an environment for the development of new ideas and talent and for existing talent to take risks, becoming a genuine laboratory for BBC One and BBC Two.

Key programme areas for BBC THREE

Comedy

BBC Three is the home of new comedy, with the ability to create shows with high impact, like Gavin and Stacey. We are particularly successful when it comes to unearthing new talent. Comedian Dan Clark's show How Not To Live Your Life and Coming of Age by 19 year-old writer Tim Dawson were both great successes for us.

We're also looking for new content through the Comedy Extra portal which uses multiplatform in an innovative way.

Entertainment

BBC Three audiences value our entertainment offering and we want more series and live events that will cut through on the channel. Lily Allen and Friends was an important multiplatform show for us and we're looking for more studio-based and talent-led entertainment.

With shows like Undercover Princes we aim to engage our audience and give them more than a simple entertainment experience. We want more shows that are able to do this.

We are also looking to commission more series and major events.

Multiplatform entertainment is focused on unique, "of the web" ideas which push the boundaries of the genre.

Drama

With the success of Being Human, BBC Three is building a reputation for distinctive and original drama.

We are continuing to look for fresh ideas that reflect the lives and aspirations of our target audience, with comedy drama being a key focus going forward.

Current Affairs

Whether it is belief or body image, bringing programming together around a single season or theme works well on BBC Three.

Our Born Survivors strand was a great success and we will be bringing it back for a third run.

We are looking for ideas for a new season as well as for single documentaries.

Factual

At the core of BBC Three's schedule are our distinctive factual shows. From Blood, Sweat and T-Shirts and Britain's Missing Top Model to The World's Strictest Parents and Last Man Standing our factual programmes are innovative, entertaining and thought-provoking.

We are looking for series as well as hour-long, one-off shows for both pre- and post-watershed slots.

The Tone of The Channel

BBC Three content is modern, distinctive and relevant - though not exclusively - to our core 16-34 year old target audience.

The tone of the channel is warm, personal and surprising with real take-out value.

Bryony Makes a Zombie Movie

Bryony Makes a Zombie Movie was a 17-week multiplatform event for BBC Three

Multiplatform Innovation

BBC Three is a mature digital entertainment brand that exploits the multiplatform world to extend the reach, range and impact of what we do.

Our most successful content is clever with multiplatform. Exclusive Being Human prequels appeared online ahead of the series launch and the blog served new and existing fans.

The highly original Bryony Makes a Zombie Movie was an "of the web" concept with a 30 minute TV slot after 17 weeks. We are looking for more distinctive ideas which are truly multiplatform at their heart.
