Technical Standards and Delivery Requirements

The different networks have their own sound and their network-specific requirements but there are common technical standards for all programme makers delivering audio for broadcast on BBC Radio.

The way we broadcast programmes is in a state of transition. The VCS digital playout system has been introduced across the networks and we are moving towards BWAV files as the preferred means of delivering the audio for broadcast. Some networks are further down this route than others and you should always discuss with the commissioning network how you deliver your programme.

We have tried to standardise the Recording and Delivery Requirements for the different radio networks, however there are still some differences. The specific requirements (see downloads) for the network which has commissioned your programme are updated frequently to reflect changes in operational requirements so please check them regularly.
