Commissioning Process

The Station

BBC 6 Music is the BBC's digital music and archive station aimed at 25-44 year old music fans.

With a potent mix of contemporary music, live sessions, music and documentaries from the vast BBC Music archive, specialist programming and a rich music core of over 3,000 credible, inspiring and pioneering songs BBC 6 Music is providing a genuine alternative to listeners seeking out a unique and entertaining music radio alternative. The Network also puts today's new and exciting music in context with the influences and inspirational artists of the past 40 years attracting new younger listeners and core demographic listeners alike to the network.

With a team of presenters including Steve Lamacq, Adam & Joe, George Lamb, Stephen Merchant, Marc Riley, Shaun Keaveny, Queens of Noize, Don Letts, Stuart Maconie, Laurene Laverne, Craig Charles, Liz Kershaw, Bruce Dickinson, Nemone, Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music has developed an entertaining and informed tone to its presentation which sees life experience sitting alongside music credibility and opinion.

Over the past 18 months the network has seen record year-on-year audience growth, record interactive traffic, received 3 key Sony nominations, been recognised in the Digital Music Awards and seen its reputation grow within both the radio and record industries.

Programmes are produced by either dedicated 6Music in-house production teams or a small group of Independent companies. When strands produced by Independents come up for renewal they are put out for tender. Once a shortlist has been drawn up, Independents are then invited to come in and pitch their proposals. The current contracts run to August 2010. Details relating to the 2010/11 renewal / tender process will be made available in Spring 2010. The following strands are currently produced by independent producers:

  • Weekend Breakfast Show
  • Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show
  • 6Mix
  • Huey Morgan
  • Dave Pearce
  • The Music Week
  • The Rock Show with Bruce Dickinson
