As you may know, the approach to commissioning on BBC Online is changing and has been for some time. Only last month, BBC Vision announced more details on its restructuring of multiplatform. Blogs were posted by Victoria Jaye about commissioning for TV & iPlayer.
Meanwhile, the BBC Trust Review of BBC Online Independent Supply, concluded in January that whilst we're meeting our quota, the commissioning processes are in need of urgent reform.
We accepted the overall findings of the Trust’s review, and in April we returned to the Trust with our proposals, which included the underpinning of a formal supply strategy focused on the following elements:
We’re about to announce updates to the operational changes we made in November. Those changes included a pilot to trial the open publication of opportunities for commissions above the value of £20,000. We also announced our plans to set up a roster of around 30-40 external suppliers focused on large-scale, sophisticated technical projects, rather than web-commissions. As we’ve developed these plans we’ve taken care to listen to the industry.
My colleague Jane McCloskey will be updating the industry tomorrow on these topics at our first BBC Online engagement event of the year, and she'll summarise her presentation here on the commissioning website tomorrow.
The aim is a simpler, more efficient set of arrangements for the market and the BBC. I cannot stress enough this is an ongoing piece of work and, in a space which is subject to significant change, we will be working with the Trust to answer the broader strategic questions and how they relate to how our business operates with the industry.
