bbc.co.uk on Mobile

Overview

The BBC delivers a range of content for users of mobile phones and PDAs. The majority of content may be categorized into three broad areas:

  • Re-purposing content, already available on www.bbc.co.uk, so that it is accessible on both WAP browsers and HTML browsers.
  • BBC content which exploits the unique experience of mobile platforms (e.g. Bitesize mobile phone applications delivered directly to a phone)
  • Communicating with audiences, by building communities and encouraging direct communication with audiences using SMS (Text Messaging).

And wherever possible, we are encouraging suppliers who propose interactive television ideas to consider the potential of integrating SMS or other potential mobile interaction into the editorial vision.

Commissioning

The BBC understands that there is a vast amount of experience and innovation from external suppliers in the mobile space, across the various UK netwroks and platforms. Going forward, commissioning priority will be given to proposals that demonstrate service experience, cost-effectiveness and the robustness of the solution provided.

Most mobile content is commissioned through BBC Vision.

Mobile content related to Radio and Music programming is commissioned through the BBC Audio & Music division.

Mobile technologies, interfaces, and applications that can be used across the BBC should approach the BBC's Future Media & Technology Mobile Team.

When work is identified for tender, approved suppliers are shortlisted and invited to submitt proposals.
