Born in Worcestershire in 1964, Alistair McGowan trained to be an actor at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
A gifted mimic, he began performing on the live comedy circuit, and picked up voice work on Spitting Image.
He was in the original radio cast of Dead Ringers, but jumped ship to write for and star in his own award winning TV vehicles, alongside his former girlfriend Ronni Ancona.
He carved a niche mimicking famous sporting personalities (notably David Beckham, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Gary Lineker), though his uncanny Richard Madeley is perhaps the greatest of all his impressions.
He played Spock in Preston Front, and tackled weighty assignments on television in Bleak House and Mayo (in which he starred as a private detective) and on stage in The Merry Wives Of Windsor for the RSC and as Serge in Art.
He is an ambassador for the World Wildlife Fund.
